View Full Version : Swapping Fatar keybeds to get different action?

Greetings all!

I've been recently trying to put together a decent MIDI organ rig using the NI B4, a UC-33 slider box, and a Behringer FCB-1010 foot controller. I'm now trying to track down a nice keyboard controller, preferably one with quasi-authentic waterfall action. I've seen the new Doepfer board, the d3m, but for ~$520 USD, it's a bit steep. Apparently, Doepfer will also sell the stand-alone Fatar waterfall action keybed (TP/8O) for that controller for ~$165 USD. I've been trying to get some info from Doepfer, Studiologic, and Fatar (no response yet) on how interchangeable the various Fatar keybeds are, but no-one has any clue.

What I'd like to do is get ahold of a a used Studiologic SL-61 (or any other Fatar based board that may work) and swap out the keybed for the waterfall action TP-8O from Doepfer. Both are 5 octave with "full size" keys (although the actual length of the keys is uncertain on account of the little overhange present on normal synth keys).

Anyone have any insights into whether this will work? Is it going to likely be only dependant on the actual length of the keys, or am I totally ignorant as to the possible variables that the keybeds may not have in common?

Thanks for any info or help on this one.

Swapping keybeds from one maker to another, thats something I've never seen tried before. There will be all kinds of issues from where the bed screws in to the type of ribbon connector used to connect to the PCBs.

Best case is save up your money and get the controller you want or look for an older instrument with waterfall keys and midi and just use it as a controller.

I talked to a shop before about getting an X5 keybed modified to get different feel, they said that the can do it but its expensive. The would take the existing keybed, add more weights under the keys and change all the springs to get that feel that I wanted.
