I thought this would make a nice thread in here:
An overview or a simple explaination of the different types of synthesis and a little guide on how to realize them.
As I'm only a little skilled in subtraktive synthesis and don't know a lot of all the other types like additive-/vektor-/formantsynthesis or FM, this is more of a request for you guys to join in and explain just what you like...
To give an entry, here's my humble explaination of subtraktive synthesis:
Starting point is most likely a harmonical rich waveform (means a wave with quite a lot of overtones). The sound is shaped then by taking away (substrakt) certain overtones, mostly by using Filters and Envelopes (to change the Filters effect over time). That's why it's called subtraktive synthesis. Just imagine a sculptor carving certain portions out of a massive stone block to create an image.
