View Full Version : Jordan's TOT lead sounds.

Just a short little note about this..

Jordan's lead sounds just keep getting better and better. Every time I hear 'em I think, "How on Earth can he top this?".. and yet, he does.

They sound a little more distorted, a little more lo-fi, a little more "filter sweepy", and there's some absolutely awesome vibrato going on.. nice and wide ;)

So many of the leads on this album really make me sit up and take notice. The little Megadeth "Rust in Peace"-ish solo section of Endless Sacrifice for example, I can't listen to without rewinding and hearing the solo section again at least once.

Outstanding job Jordan. Thanks for being a wonderfully progressive inspiration :D

Well.......I don't agree !!!!!!

I think that NOW Jordan's Lead sound is too similar to Pinnella's Lead (from Symphony X)......do'nt you think ????

JackJens: I don't think that you can compare Jordan with him in any way... He has NO chance against Jordan...

They're just comparing SOUNDS. Besides, this isn't a contest, dude.

Bloody hell, what's wrong with comparing sounds? Is that not allowed?

Anyway, I hear it too and that's actually something my friend commented on the first time he heard TOT. I can't remember the solo but he said the sound was very much like Michael Pinella.

My fault... Correction: You can't compare Jordan's sounds with the sounds of Pinella!

I also think the "old" lead sound is better. It cuts through the mix better and is generally more unique. The "new" sound is a little bit too much like a guitar for me... IMHO.

Not really, although I really don't like Symphony X very much, and haven't heard everything they've done.

When I first heard Jordan's new lead sounds, I thought it was a little bit darker, and more "analog" and dirty than his normal sounds are. This is what I like in keyboard sounds.. I don't like things sounding too bright, crisp, and hi-fi. I prefer warm, grounded tones.

When I first heard Jordan's LTE lead sound, I thought maybe it was a little -too- digital sounding, but it had a quality I liked. Not to mention the fact that it's being played by a player of his caliber ;) That always helps.

But from what I've heard of Michael Pinella, his lead sound was more "square-ish" than Jordan's more "saw-ish" sound.

I did think at times that the filter sweeps really reminded me of Derek Sherinian, because of his Monster Lead and penchant for wah style tones, but overall I think it'sstill very original.

The new tone, combined with that absolutely awesome vibrato, just bowls me over ;)

In my opinion Pinella's lead sound is very thin and sounds a bit cheap at times. Mr. Jens Johansson has a cool square lead sound. Jordan's sounds on LTE are my faves.

Mr. Jens Johansson has a cool square lead sound.

FYI it ain't a square lead sound, it is actually a sawtooth sound with an external guitar distortion module.

As for Jordan's new lead sound(s), I think it becomes closer to Derek's Monster Lead, which I think is cool because that gives me courage to program the latter on my Kurzweil as well.

OK, thanks for the explanation, for me it sounded very squarish :)

I don't think it's a case of imitating, it's just what the sound of the distorted, filter sweep lead reminded me of.

After listening to the album a bit more, I realized that the sound of Jordan's lead sounds sounds very "Rolandish", in particular one sound which sounds like a factory preset of a JD-800. Hmmm, maybe that's where V-Synth came into play ??

I don't think so, Georges. As far as I know he didn't use the Roland on the new album - I think he even bought it after the keys had already been recorded!

Kurzweil Users: This doesn't require KDFX, Sample RAM, OR Any Rom options. It's just your Base Kurzweil sound. Should work in K2000's as well!

Frank, I checked out your website! It seems that you are one hell of a keyboardist! The sign ''keyboard wizard'' beneath the name '' Over The Edge'' isn't exaggerated at all! Super cool gear you have there! Really proferssional! Perhaps you can record something!

OMG, those samples are B E A Utiful!! Ravinia is so coool! Ain't the audio cute? Wish I was close to ''someone like you'', then I would Dance Agian. So, waht are we waiting for? Let's play! Instead of being a show-off, i'll be a showdown!! :D:D

OK, enough fun! You wouldn't have any transcropitions, or a chord schedule of Ravinia?

Just FYI, if you listen to Stream Of Consciousness, right when the distortion guitar kicks in and you hear Jordan's first sound for the piece, the sound you're hearing is "TrncHook" from the Synth Lead catagory of the Motif ES. Jordan used a factory patch!

This wouldn't be the first time Jordan has used a factory patch - there's half a dozen or more Karma combi presets in 4NYC.

I've been known to use a factory patch. ;)

We have to admit, along with the "wow but how do I use that" presets, there are some excellent patches these sound designers come up with.

I'm going to listen to some of Frank's stuff, and then hit my own keys. I hope all you American yanks had a happy Thanksgiving.
