can someone of you explain in which way jr uses his pitch and his mod-wheel while playing his amazing leads (f.e. home, fatal tragedy and so on)
to me it seems as if he didn't only crate a pitch with his pitchwheel but sth. else i can't identify :-(
but it sounds great and so i'd like to find out more about his methods...
thx

he doesn't use mod wheel at all.. he use pitch wheel for doing vibrato. perhaps what you listen "different" is the feeback that appears when he use aftertouch. usually he does aftertouch when he plays a bend. when he do that, the level of some layers falls down while other (a "feeback layer") grows up. This gives to the sound this particular color :)

Whats the difference?
Just a wheel he can use to control many things:P
Didn't he use a mod wheel (or pitch whatever) to control tone also, in LTL?

the bend wheel only does bend.

Wrong Luca, he does use the modwheel now and then. Exepcially on the LSFNY dvd.

He uses his pitch bend to do the vibrato thing and he uses mainly his footpedal to create wah-wah sounds...

he uses mod wheel but not for doing vibratos.
for example he uses the mod wheel in home for doing whawha

He actually uses the MW for vibrato in LtL for at least one of his patches.

His pitch bend technique is amazing. Although it seems easy, and personally pitch bending i find easy, yet vibrato, now i'm talking GOOD vibrato on the wheel is difficult to achieve. But as usual JR is just amazing at everything. As for the Mod Wheel he assigns it several different things.
As already mentioned Wah-Wah in home is done with the mod wheel, and although i forget which songs, some effects are brought in using it.
In the Great Debate he uses the Mod wheel as a pitch bend, to bend up and octave. He uses it at the same time as holding the note with the pedal, trilling with the ribbon, bending up on the pitch wheel at the same time as bending on the Mod wheel (!!!!!!!!!). well...........ahem......i can do that yes....

The ultimate way of doin' pitch vibrato is ofcourse on a violin.
What'd be interesting would be to know what range people set their wheels at. Myself I prefer the Minimoog's approx 7 seminotes range. And then use the ear for landing the pitch.
Notice that you can do amazing bends by altering the notes you play.. for instance - during a passage you bend a note up - alter the scale and when it's suits the music - bend it back.
Applying vibrato with a pitchwheel is the ulitmate Minimoog-way of doin' things. The alltime master of this art is Kit Watkins. I recon Rudess has been listening close to him.
Two tunes that might be of interest, both from Camel album "I can See Your House From Here", namely the tunes "Wai"t and "Ice". The latter contains one of the most expressive minimoog solos ever played. Enjoy!
