Best bet is to get a little USB midi interface, something like a M-Audio Midisport (I have the 4x4, but you wouldn't need anything that big for only one synth). They're quite cheap, and very reliable.

As for a synth, for that kind of price, there's nothing really by Roland or Yamaha unless you look at second hand gear. Best bet new would be an E-MU. I have 2 (soon to be 3), I find them to be great. The PK-6 is the all-rounder's choice, they were $1295 when they were launched but have been dropped in price twice in the last year or so, and they're around the $500 mark now I believe (I'm in the UK, they sell for £299 here).

The cheapest version to connect your keyboard with the PC in MIDI format would be to buy a gameport/MIDI cable. I use one, too, because my sound card doesn't have a MIDI port aswell.

The gameport is simply the port where you connect your joystick or your gamepad, but it works perfectly!

As for a synth in that price range: I don't know! :)

By the way: I think you won't be able to connect your synth AND your keyboard with the PC, even though I never used USB MIDI interfaces.

A game port / midi cable is a inexpensive route to go but the question is when you get a synth will you still be hooking up the PSR to the PC if so you need 2 midi ports. Chances are whatever synth your going to get wil fully replace your PSR and you wont be recording with it.

There should be a few used keyboards that you can find in your price range.

Roland XP50 - well rounded instrument tones expandable
Roland RS 5 or 9 - not expandable but a good starter
Yamaha S30 good tones same as S80?
Korg N364 - should be good as well
Korg N5 - good tones but keys might not feel that good
Korg 01W - popular proggy board

Thanks guys !

I went today to my music store, unfortunately, they only have PSRS and that stuff.. the good thing was a Roland EM-50... is this a good choice ?

Oh, and also a Roland XP-80.. but... a little expensive..

Costs ?

Roland Em-50 <- $610
Roland XP-80 <- $2000

is the Roland Em50 a good synth ?..

How much will a Roland Xp-50 costs ? +-/ ?

Cheers

I'm not sure (I've never seen one) but isn't the EM-50 a portable keyboard, as opposed to a synth? There's a significant amount of difference in terms of the way they work and how flexible they are. Generally, if it's got speakers built in, it's a portable keyboard and should be burnt on a pyre at the first available opportunity ;-)

(OK so that might be a bit of a strong response :))

Here are some of ideas:
Maybe a Masterkeyboard with some sound modules.
For example a Yamaha DX7 with a Korg or Roland Module.
Cool Modules:
Korg X5DR
Korg 05RW
Korg NS5r
Roland JP1010
Roland JP1080
Roland XV2020

This should all be in your pricrange.

The advantage is you buy a keyboard with good keyaction one time and then buy new modules if you like to. The DX7 is a very good Masterkeyboard. You should find all the stuff on ebay.
