View Full Version : Cubase SX -> Getting started (new questions Nov. 9th!)

Yesterday, I finally got Cubase SX and installed it. Yet, I didn't have so much time to play with it, but I think I will have quite a few questions about it when I will get deeper into it.

I always hate it when there's a new version of a special program, which is very expensive, even though not very much has changed. The problem with Cubase is that there are always SO many things changed that I don't know what I prefer... ;)

My first problem refers to the MIDI settings.
I open a MIDI file and the output of every MIDI channel says "not connected". So, I have to click on a track of EACH channel and set the correct MIDI output. I haven't found the window where I can set that up. Does anyone of you know where I can do that?

I'm glad for every help I get.

I'll post all my next questions in here aswell, so it would be nice if you could check this topic from time to time ;)

Thanks in advance!

Jan.

I remember hunting around for this for ages too... sorry to say that I can't remember where it was now, and I've uninstalled it and gone back to using Sonar (glad I didn't pay £££'s for it! That is at least one advantage of stuff being available over the net, even though I don't applaud the legality of it, that you can try stuff before investing your hard-earned cash!) after a few days trying it out. I'm sure there'll be others here who've figured it out too, though. I seem to remember it not being where I expected it to be, certainly!

Haha - yeah, that's the problem in most cases with Cubase, indeed!

How could you try Cubase SX ages ago? I thought it was released this year?

Sorry, think there's a slight misunderstanding... I said I was looking for the MIDI setup bit in SX for ages... I wasn't using it ages ago (in fact I only got hold of it (Cubase SX 2) about 2 weeks ago)

I see - got it wrong then ;)

I found out how to set the default MIDI output by using the help :D

But I already have two new questions:

1. How can I setup the MIDI instruments? E.g. chn. 1 = Piano, chn. 2 = Bass and so on? Couldn't find out how to do that.

2. I miss those "L" and "R" marks in the main window, where I can set where the record session begins. I always used "L", "R" to set which part has to be repeated...

1. Depends on VST instrument/hardware synth you use...

2. It's there...both are dragged all the way left...

Thanks for the reply, Purator... I'm getting behind all the new things, because I realized that the help files are complete... That's not the usual case when you download Cubase ;)
I've found out pretty much already and hope to record my first WAVE and MP3 files soon!
Thanks again for every reply in here!

When I turn on the MIDI thru option, I can hear what I play as MIDI signal, but the tone appears about one second later. The same thing happens when I use VST instruments.
What can I do against that?
Axiom Bass told me to setup my ASIO driver, but I didn't find out how to do it.

Every help is, of course, gladly appreciated ;)

THANKS!

ASIO Driver is setup under:
Devices -> Device Setup (then the VST Multitrack part where you select the ASIO Drivers).

What's your soundcard?

Creative Soundblaster Live! 5.1 (not the platinum edition!)

Unfortunately, Live! cards don't have ASIO drivers so you may want to check out third-party ASIO Drivers (like popular KX driver - you can achieve 2ms latency if correctly setup).
Make sure you have read the guides/docs on that site regarding setting up KX driver and other stuff:
