Hi there,
I am a vocalist, and I say that because I also play keyboard in my band, but my first and best instrument is voice. My keyboard background is exclusively classical. Now I play in a prog metal band. I want to begin to write, but I feel overwhelmed by there being infinite possibilities in keys and progresions. I feel like there are some writing "ground rules" that I am not aware of. My background kind of ignores writing and improvisation. I am learning day by day about soloing, blues scales, pentatonic scales, dominant chords etc. that just weren't part of my education. I have been playing piano for about 24 years, but have not progressed in at least 15. Now I am moving forward with my playing, but I was hoping there is some kind of resource that could help me with writing. I do want to maintain the creativity obviously, but I feel like there is something I'm missing. I now have a Motif7 with a sequencer, which gives me the ability to record and show the band what I want to contribute, but my slate continues to be blank. Any encouragement or tips anyone could give would be helpful. Thanks. My musical interests lie between Dream Theater and Nine Inch Nails in the spectrum. My band does Iron Maiden style metal with techno elements.
