Attention ladies and gentlemen.
Behold, as you are now in the online
presence of the newest owner of
a brand new...
Yamaha Motif ES8!
I got it yesterday and took it with me to work today.
During my free time I managed to put together setups for
real-life situations. I even managed to sequence a couple of brief instrumentals.
All this without even cracking the manual open.
This board is waaay easier to use than I originally thought
based on past complaints re: Motif Classice interface.
You know what else? The more I played with it the more
I loved the sounds and boy are there TONS of 'em.
This evening I got a smart-media card for storage and
a kit to hook it up to my computer. I decided not to get
ram and a hard drive just yet since I have
been using my Kurzweil for my sampling jobs.
So far so good. The acid test will come on
Nov. 14 when I take it on the road for the
next Neil Zaza show at the Hard Rock Live
in downtown Cleveland. Visit www.neilzaza.com
for further details.
Well, gotta go play some more and maybe I'll
get some sleep later too!

Very cool, Frank. I heard that envelope response was improved in the ES series as well as having a more robust effects section - let me know if the distortions and rotary speaker are of any quality. ;)

Nice move Frank! We have MOTIF6s at MI in our Digital Music/Synthesis class room: I didn't have time to scroll thru the whole range of possibilities they have but as far as I unveiled the synth looked great in a 360 degrees range. Extreme ease of use, you are right.
Have fun! oh and if you drop by L.A. just let me know,
Alberto
Frank, the jealousy and pure contempted envy I hold for you right now is indescribable.. enjoy that divine piece of wonderment you lucky, lucky old man...

FYI, the Motif ES was reviewed in this month's Keyboard Magazine. The review was interesting in that it was compared a lot to the K2600; not so much in terms of features, but in overall usefulness and the "gotta have it" factor. Both these boards kick ass and would make an incredible compliment to each other. I can't wait to earn my MoES6 with Vocal Harmony and Acoustic Modeling board, right Mike?

Both have outstanding sounds.
With the ES, I don't see myself having
to reach for any of my piano, guitar or
drum CD roms any time soon.

Man oh man...check out my avatar! Whaddaya think of that
bad boy in THAT picture?
Three days later and I concur...
that it's STILL freakin' awesome!
And VERY easy to use...don't believe
all those rumors to the contrary.
It took me about an hour to record a pretty
progressive demo with bass, drums, piano,
acoustic guitar, and two string parts with
lots of odd times, mind you; only about an hour.
I hope to have my demos up for you to hear soon.

Yeah the Motif ES is great. I've had one for a month now and have brought it everywhere with me. I have the ES6 which is a little more portable. For extended range and weighted action, I have a Yamaha P60s which has a couple nice pianos. I had an ES8 but the thing was a tank and lugging it around gig to gig in my little Cavalier was a challenge (and its suspension and my back). I also mostly compose orchestral music so I like the non-weighted action when it comes to strings, winds, brass, etc.
The thing that is really great about the ES (or one of the many things actually) is the fact that it accepts sample libraries from Akai and Yamaha. I've gotten a few discs already from Keyfax and East/West and they sound great. Having this open-ended design makes the ES an unlimited resource for any type of sound one would want. While I'm impressed with the improvement of the onboard orchestral samples (love the French Horns and bassoon inparticular), I am glad I can load string and brass samples from a library. Oh, Prosonus Orchestral COllection is available for the Yamaha format as well as a scaled down version of Peter Siedlczek's Advanced Orchestra. I'm still waiting on both discs to arrive but when they do YAHOO!
Cheers!
p.s. I love the onboard sequencer on the ES. I use that more than Sonar 2.2 for songs.

Well boys and girls,
I took my board to a rehearsal with guitarist Neil Zaza
yesterday. He had no prior knowledge of this board
and has always favored Kurzweil sounds.
In a nutshelll...
he loved it!!!
He enjoyed the fullness of the sounds like the piano and strings
and even thought that the analog pads and comps were
more fresh and current/modern sounding than the sounds
off my K2600XS. I was able to switch between some complex Performances
in mix mode flawlessly with no interruption in sound,
just like on my Kurz.
A part of me thought that he
would freak out at the change since he is pretty set in his
ways as far as his preference in synth sounds but seemed
to embrace the ES. I think he wants one toom now (ha ha ha).
Hey, if anyone's in the Cleveland area on Friday Nov. 14
come check out the Neil Zaza Band at the Hard Rock Live.
