I haven't seen Jordan for a couple of days, but I did see Bert this morning as I was leaving for work and chatted with him for a few minutes. He tells me that Jordan is recording keyboard tracks today in the city at the studio where they're working on DT's new album, and when that's done, they'll have the first song in the can.
Just thought you'd like to know.

Jordan is planning to use the Continuum, although I don't know if he has yet. He's also been working a lot more with softsynths, and has been spending a lot of time in Reaktor lately in particular, which I believe he's also planning to use on the new record. Bert tells me this record will be "more prog, less metal", and so I think Jordan wants to come up with some unique, more contemporary sounds, and will have more space to use them than in DT's last release.

REAKTOR 4
The fusion of synthesis, sampling and effects
REAKTOR 4, the award-winning modular sound studio, is the ultimate tool for sound design and music production. REAKTOR 4 lets musicians and engineers design and build their own instruments, samplers, effects and sound design tools.
REAKTOR 4 is also a world-class studio right out of the box – its Core Library includes 31 high-professional instruments and effects. In addition, more than 1700 free instruments can be downloaded from the growing NI User Library.
REAKTOR offers access to an arsenal of sonic tools limited only by the imagination.

Nice to see him using advanced tools, Richard. One aspect that set Jordan apart from the rest of the rock keyboardists was his ability to do complex sound design and use it in a performance context.
The closest person to him in terms of sound design in the rock keyboardist pantheon is Emerson. And after Emerson got the GX-1 he pretty much reverted to classic sounds (brass, strings, flutes, and the like). When I heard that Jordan had selected the Triton as his main controller, I was wondering where the new sounds were going to come from. The V-synth seemed to have a couple of new tricks but not much more. Well a laptop with Reaktor should take care of that issue.
There is a lot of unexplored territory where synthesis meets prog rock. Here's to Jordan the explorer!

That´s one of the reasons I admire Jordan as I do. He doesn´t stay on the olympus of sound design.. he brings it back to earth.
Other reason is that he tries to push the envelope... I admire people that is not afraid to go into uncharted territory... and he´s an adventurer.

It'd be cool if we saw a double-rotating stand in the next tour, with both the Kurzweil and the Continuum.

yeah, that would be cool, but it would be the EXTREME and the continuum if that happened 8) :P
by the way, i wonder if any of the new sounds are coming from the extreme? i read he is using it with dream theater from now on....

I've used Reaktor 4 quite a bit in the past month or so at University and it's pretty cool. So far we've only used preset ensembles (mainly to get the class used to different types of synths by loading up models of a Mini Moog, Juno, etc.) We're going to get onto creating our own instruments in t he next few weeks which should be cool.
It's certainly a huge tool for creating just about any sound so it should be very interesting to see what Jordan comes up with!

That's great news to me! John Petrucci is a fantastic guitarist, and all of that marvelous technique is buried when he shreds. People like Steve Vai and Joe satriani have nothing on this guy when he starts crafting guitar tones and weaving intricate melodies with Jordo. I'm one of those guys who turned up my nose at the last DT album, because I don't like metal, sorry. I'm prog, true blue, through and through.

It's hard..you almost have to be a physics expert to deal with all of these filters and routing paths, etc..
On another note though, my vote is for a 360 degree rotating keyboard sphere for Jordan!!
