This wasn't my building but mine was next to it. It was kinda a harsh way to wake up. It was started at 6:30 in the morning by some kid who was drinking and smoking... the joys of college housing.

Wow, this is really hard. Which one is your house? The one on the left or the one on the right?
I hope nobody got injured and that that "kid" will never smoke again...

I'm off to the right. The kicker is the ATF ruled it an "accident" and he didn't want won't get charged with anything.
The window on the second floor of the 3rd picture belongs to a friend of mine and they lost everything they own and they can't do anything about.
Luckily nobody was even hurt but it still sucks for the people that lost everything including their home.

My sympathy for you and your friend. Must be really bad to lose everything you own. At least he is still alive, compare to one of my good friend who died in a car accident a few weeks ago. He was riding with a drunk driver... calis de tabarnac

Yep, good thing nobody got hurt!! And I bet the kid will be having a ball with his parents a) for smoking b) for drinking and c) for burnig the frickin' house down!!! Man what a looser.
By the way, you said your frind lost everything and couldn't do anything about it. Doesn't he have house insurance?

It's an apartemnt and none of my friends had renters insurance.. but they did get a slew of donations from Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Etc of gift cards so they could get clothes and basic things.

That sucks, man.
I hope he has insurance if the fire wasn't started through his own negligence.
About June of this year, we were living in an apartment, and we were debating whether to buy a house over the summer or wait until the fall. Then there was a fire in the apartment complex - not our building - and that made the decision for us.
How did the fire start? A kid set his pants on fire, panicked, but came up with a smart and sensible solution to the problem: he took off his pants, threw them on the couch, put on a different set of pants, and went outside to play, without telling a soul. Ten minutes later, the fire brigade is on its way.
To an extent, the safety of you and your posessions will always by placed in jeopardy by other people's stupidity, but living in an apartment complex increases the risk hugely, because you share a contiguous physical space. It simply isn't an option for me any more - I just don't trust other people enough not to do incredibly stupid things that place my family's lives and possessions in danger.
