Okay, so I had an awesome b-day, played music, etc... Tonnes of fun.

Then my fiancee gave me something and I can't put it down. I love it.

This is the exact one I have.
It's not just a regular laser pointer, but it's a GREEN laser pointer. The color it emits is much closer to the wavelength that the human eye responds at making it look MUCH brighter than regular pointers.

Well, this one's so bright, I can see the beam in the daytime. It's crazy.

This is a direct comparison, and just for good mesaure:

http://tjtech.org/~CPF/FrenchyLed/laser.jpg

It's a touch less noticable with more light in the room, but otherwise, awesome present. :)

This is a slightly better direct comparison type pic between the average green and red pointer:

Nice! I want mine!

I don't understand that they still call that a "pointer" though. Looks much more like a flash light to me, if I look at the radius of the green light :)

you filthy b*stard :D I've been thinking to order one of this lasers from ThinkGeek.. but you now have one... I WANNA A PURPLE LAZ0RZ!!!111

A blue laser is still the epitome of success... Back when I was doing my graduate research, I co-authored a review article on Gallium research. At the time, there were no blue LED's or lasers (well, non-industrial, that is). Gallium arsenide was the future. And now, 15 years later, I'm the proud owner of a CD-R player/recorder with - you guessed it - a blue LED prominently displayed on the front. :P

Yeah, definitely not as cool as a laser pointer... if you have cats they LOVE/HATE laser pointers! :D If you don't have cats but your neighbors do, try flashing the laser pointer through a window and watch the cats freak.

The green radius you're looking at is actually reflection off of the wall. The ACTUAL green dot radius is only 1 mm. When I shine it across the lake, it's still about 1.2 mm. It's awesome, but it's VERY bright which is why it looks like a flashlight.

The blue lasers exist, but sadly are still about 2-3000$ because of some patented copyright stuff, and our eyes are about equally as resonsive to red and blue light so they look the same brightness. *Another reason I wanted the green one ;)*

Anyway, it's cool, I'm a nerd and both of my cats love it. :)

Night - TEH ROXORZ. Yes, you can see the beam all the way, JUST like a star wars saber. It's a LOT thinner than one, but it works.
Last night we *Heather (my fiancee), Laura (My roommate) and Matt (Her boyfriend)* got a whole bunch mirrors and had the beam flying around the room and pretended we were playing mission impossible!
How much did it cost?... I don't know - I got it as a b-day present, and Heather won't tell me.
In any case, it's MUCH more fun than a regular red pointer and I have no idea what the fascination is, but it's awesome regardless :)

Yeah, I knew it was that one. But I was wondering why people would pay such a huge amount of money for just a handpiece.

BECAUSE IT'S SO FWEEAKING AWESOME!!!!11

it also might be because the only way to get one otherwise is to become a jedi and make one yourself, so when master replicas put them out for $20 a piece, the jedi counsul pettitioned them and protested pointing out all the hard work they went through to get their own when shlubs like you and me could just get it for $20, they demanded a raise in the price.

yet again, who says it's just a handle?!? maybe it takes a true jedi to figure out how to turn the thing on. ....just a thought....

(okay, thats my +1 for the day! :P )

Since green direct injection laser diodes aren't readily available, this pointer is based on the use of Diode Pumped Solid State Frequency Doubled (DPSSFD) laser technology. A high power IR laser diode at 808 nm pumps a tiny block of Nd:YVO4 generating light at 1,064 nm which feeds a KTP intracavity frequency doubler crystal to produce the green beam at 532 nm.

........What the hell did he just say?
