I saw that Garritan had finally released demos for the personal orchestra yesterday and was blown away. Needless to say, Garritan Personal Orch has made it onto my Christmas list.

If these demos are any indication, then yes they
should be on everyone's X-mas list. :)

Angelic Layer: take a look at www.postpiano.com they have a "Post Accordeons" library that may work fine for you: a French friend of mine composed sweet soundtracks using that library as part of his instruments set and I was really impressed by the realism he achieved. I have no samples right now but you may find them on the official site I provided you with.
Frank, did you had chance to test Vienna Symphonic Library? Man that one is outstanding! I tested it here at MI and I was astonished (I knew and heard Garritan already and found VSL some steps forward).
Actually some Garritan samples were off tune to my ear, hope they solved the problem ;) Btw, it's an amazing library,

VSL is fantastic!
Absolutely beautiful strings...

I've heard the demos and read the review and
background on the recording process for VSL in Keyboard.
I'm VERY impressed. They instrument recordings sound
extremely convincing. The samples I generally use
are Akai-based, not Giga. It's really important to me
since I don't do a whole lot of sequencing that any
orch. samples I use are as 'playable' as possible.
There are a lot of libraries out there that sound
great as you piece individual instrument samples
to form one cohesive orchestral arrangement.
You don't really have that luxury when you play
all your parts live.
Jennifer Hruska of Sonic Implants (formerly of Kurzweil)
has a new string collection that I'm going to check out next.
I've heard great things about them as well.

That's true Frank, I understand the angle from whom you are looking at the problem and you are right.
I've been using Gigasampler technology since November 2002, when I started working on Feelings Unnoticed. I have to say that, even if it can be a bit hard to achieve, a reliable and powerful GigaRack machine is still possible. My Giga sampler rack mount workstation performs incredibly well and samples are as playable as AKAI versions. In addition, you get a lot of realism because of Giga sample playback engine.
When it comes to filters usage, though, Gigasampler and Gigastudio aren't so good. This made me come to the conclusion that this relative new technology is awesome when it's used to playback samples that do not need good filters (so everything that's relying on samples quality/number/size really feel great).
I know what some people could say: that actually every library can rely on filters. That's true but, from my point of view, you can build a good piano library relying on samples OR relying on filters (OR both).
As far as concerns Sonic Implants Symphonic Orchestra, I didn't have chance to put my hands on it but some clips I heard actually made me think about samples phrases and riffs (which acts great as a fake, but we want to PLAY stuff, not copy paste it). VSL is fantastic "samples and articulations"-wise.
Thinking about powerful soft-samplers, anyone with these needs should make sure to check out Kontakt by www.nativeinstruments.de
Men, they should endorse me for all of this ;)
