Leads? The most comlex thing in the history of mankind?

Being a newbie to the forum (yet definately not to the OC or JR/Dream Theater) i have read several topics on making leads, and especially interesting: Jordan's absolutely amazing lead he uses.
The trouble is, how the hell do you start creating one?? his is like 7 sounds piled together with incredible masses of effects. But who would thing to put an Oboe in a lead sound.......maybe you would but i wouldn't!!
Being the proud owner of a Triton (although i have just read the wonderful thread telling me that they are the weakest of the mentioned group, it's still like astrophysics to me!!) i'm trying to create leads that sound good, and am about to get the MOSS upgrade to allow me to mix 8 oscillators. Yet can anybody give me any hints on what to use?? because picking instruments out of the air to start creating them is quite a silly way to start!!!! starting with two is hard enough but more complex sounds are hard to create....

JR Lead only uses a subtle flanged delay effect. Read post that exaplain JR Lead above.

Dude - He thinks that things like Saw+ and Lopass are effects, because on the Triton they are - he read it right, just didn't understand because he's not a Kurzweil user.

What I did when making his lead on my LE, I used 4 programs, 1 combi. They basically made the 7 layers he has in his lead, but the difference is this: I could use distortion on one program *for say a distorted oboe and clarinet* and then used Saw and Square through a lowpass on the second program, etc.. Until I had the 8 layers. *I used 8, one for feedbackish sound he has on aftertouch*

Anyway, hope this gives a little direction :)

thanks! i'll sit and plow through my triton manual to understand abit more of what you are saying but it should help alot!!! i still can't make it though.....have to wait til i get paid and can buy the MOSS!!! and yes you are right, those things are effects in the triton, and i think thats half the reason that it is so complex, they haven't helped anybody with it anyway!! cheers
