I think this might be useful for all of you people to use as reference:
I put the item for sale on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3756407803&ssPageName= ADME:B:EOAS:IT:3) and one user bid on it. The first thing I look for is his feedback: "0". This means (along with the sunny icon http://pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/icon/iconNewId_16x16.gifmeaning "I'm new") that there are no comments on his reliability.
This doesn't mean anything by itself of course..so I send the guy an email in which I was informing him of my payment modes etc. He was warned he had 7 days to pay and I'll ship to his address using USPS.
The reply I received is a clear scam attempt. Take what he wrote as an example and never follow up with this.
Hello,
Thanks for your email, Yes i am very much interested
on it, I want to buy the Korg PME 40 pedalboard with 7
modules + Wave Shaper!! I would like to inform you
once again that the mode of payment is going to be by
Cashier check. This check will be sent to you by my
client who which is lives in the United State of
America and he is owing me ($4,500) Dollares so I
decided to use the money to buy the said item from
you. Hope i can entrust the check in your hands as
long as the check is cleared you are required to
deduct the cost of your Korg PME 40 pedalboard with 7
modules + Wave Shaper!! then send the remaining
balance to my shipper concerned for the pick up.
To make this payment available to you, I will need the
following information from you. Full Name, Contact
Address and your Phone Number. With this information
which of course I will forward to my client, the check
will be made available to you.
As per the shipping, my frieght agent will come for
the pick up but that will be after we both might have
settle for the payment.
Best regards
John Cole.
What he does is the following: He has a blank cashier's check that is stolen from a bank or obtained in other illegal way (cashier's check are property of the respective banks emitting them and therefore not available for private use); he fills it up with false information and signatures and sends it to you via regular mail in the most anonymous envelope possible with no references to the sender.
If you follow his directions, you go to your bank and try and cash it. Now there are two things that might happen: the bank performs a security check before clearing it or the bank clears it automatically. This depends on the amount of money you have with the bank. If you have a student account or other small amount of money in your account, the bank will "check the check" and it will pop up that it's fake. Most bank close your account immediately and void the check but in the worst cases you might be charged of fees. The worst case scenario is when you have a certain reputation in the bank (old account holder, lots of money etc) so that bank clears the check automatically and gives you money.
When they discover this is a fraud you'll be the only one responsible for that and you'll be legally prosecuted. Serious stuff. The scammer will have better chances of not being caught, depending on the situation. Sure thing is if you sent him the money via Western Union he'll be probably partying with that.
I know of scammers that faced bad situations, like personal blind revenge or legal prosecutions and they're now watching life from the wrong side of those metal bars.
All in all it's very serious stuff, I hope to have posted something useful. Probably most of you know this stuff but if I made some of you go "wow I didn't know that!" that's good.
SIDENOTE: This guy writes in the same way another guy named "Jerry Cliff" wrote me months ago..he was another scammer. Also he was faking him as a guy from the UK so there are chances we're talking about the same guy. Interesting :-)
Heads up,
Alberto

Alberto you sold it to someone with -4? have you read the comments? I don't think you sold it but it says johncole_2004 is the winner.
Advised by ebay 'johncole_2004' is a fraudulent account. Ebayers BEWARE!!!!!!!!!

Al'Bert, sorry to hear about your bad luck with EBay, I had enough when I bid for a "legit" Triton Extreme88, received almost 20 e-mails about a "similar item for sale for 300$" and found out afterwards that the original seller was a fake as well.
I know you're a great musician and a nice person, so good luck with selling your pedals to someone who truly appreciates them. If I had the money I'd have a go....

Thanks for the good words man.
It's mainly part of the game..once you start it you have to roll with the punches too. In a perfect world it would be as smooth as silk but this world is not exactly the icon of perfection :-) and considering how bad things can go, we don't have time to get deep into eBay problems.
You are - however - right..some things really make you go question-mark.
Thanks again and all the best to you too,
