Over The Edge

I attended a Yamaha clinic at Gand Music and Sound
last night, in Northfield,IL. The clinician for the evening
was a gentleman by the name of Allen Gore.
He pretty much solidified what I assumed of the Motif ES
as a workstation/performance instrument. Prior to the night's
event, I had already taken it upon myself to check out the sounds on the ES for the past month so I already new about the stellar sounds.
What I was introduced to last night were the various music
production functions typically used for songwriting in the
studio. I like how the ES now takes, for example, a vocal
and inserts it into a sequence or pattern and makes it fit
musically. With my other workstations I'll record a real
world instrument like a guitar and all is usually well until
later into the sequence, I'll experience a little MIDI drift.
This is annoying and has discouraged me from ever doing
anything like that again. This timing allignment feature on the
ES is kind of reminiscent of my ACID program. I like the
1700 or so arpeggiations of many, many different styles.
I won't really need to go out and get sample CD's anymore because
of this function. I love how you can time slice a sample and slow it down
or speed it up without changing the pitch of your sample...
and you can do this all relatively quickly.
Most importantly, there IS a way to switch sounds without
interruption by copying voices or performances to song or
pattern mode and using the mix function to toggle back
and forth, by hand, betweeen the various sounds.
I only wished I could somehow incorporate a footswitch
to free my hands up, but still, I will still be able to pull
off my typical sets live the way I currently do with my Kurz.
