Get one, put it through a modern effects device or guitar pedal. You'll be amazed.

I don't know what you need or what you are looking for, but maybe you should check the DX-5 aswell, because it's always good to have a keyboard with 88 keys!

Isnt he using it just as a midi controller? Though i heard he used a DX-7 patch through one of his effectprocessors as a lead. But that doesnt make the DX-7 kick ass...
I listened some demo clips of the DX-7, and i think i can find most sounds (even better) on my good old Yamaha PSR-730 :(
Im still not sure what to do. I got an offer to get a DX-7 II-D for 250 euros somewhere near my city. Anybody can help me convince either the seller or the buyer (me! :D)?
Any places where it really shines without any effect processor?

I don't like on-tour-always-drunk-keyboarders...
Weirdo :P
Attitude means a lot more to me than playing 100% correctly. Jens is drunk and still plays incredibly and improvises each keyboard solo.
Being sober on stage is boring. BUT: If I were to play in a DT-like band it would be difficult to play the shit right.... That's why I'm not :D
Anyway, what comes to the DX7, I'd like to point something out. It is an EXCELLENT controller for 2 reasons:
1. Best keys I've played (un-88 )
2. The buttons. You can change your patch with one keypress only. And in the DX-II version you've got 64 buttons instead of 32... Who the heck needs more patches in one show usually??.... (ok enthusiastics, please don't go "JORDAN does" :) )
Anyway, I've got DX-7. As a controller. And it rocks!

Sure the keyfeeling isnt out of date? Does it feel good enough to do piano arpeggios on it? How about the benders?
Ive played on a couple of very old synths that come from the same period. Like the Roland U-20, wich had some kind of outdated keyboard. Its piano sounded extremely good though, imo even better than my current XP-80.

Ah the benders, forgot about them. The benders are pretty wide-motioned (just made that word up) + There's a small "hole" or "ditch" or whatever in the middle, which is useful for doing vibrato with the bend wheel. Easy to lock your thumb there.

Well officially, it's not semi-weighted, I believe. BUT it has a unique touch.

Is the keyboard action ok for solos?
Do DX7 and DX7 II have the same action?
I am thinking about replacing my KOrg DW-8000 with a DX7.

Hey people..how do the 32 buttons of dx7 work?
is it possible to assign a patch of the key controlled to "button 1" ( for example..) and another different patch ( of the controlled synth..) to "button 2" ? if yes i will buy an arsenal of dx7!!
thanks friends!

1. Yep, Jens uses it as a midi controller, he uses Roland JV series for his sounds and for his lead he uses a sawtooth-like (it could also be lead pulse-like because it's thin) with a guitar distortion module.
2. I kinda doubt that. Ok, true for standard sounds but not when it comes to specific FM sounds ...
3. Yes, digital pianos, futuristic sounds in general. If you want a powerful FM sound with LOTS of presets (around 1,500), you should go for a Yamaha FS1R. If the keys matter, go for DX-7. BTW, an FM plug-in for EX or MOTIF (ES) series is way less powerful than the FS1R (which should come quite cheap by now).

If you press button 1 he will select sound Nr 1 of your synth and so on. So you have to arrange the sounds you need. But to select (32 or 64) patches on the fly sounds really amazing!
mtkettun
11-03-2003, 09:11 AM
Yeah that's how it works. I use it as a controller for my JV-1010, and in JV's user bank I've got 32 most needed sounds in positions 1-32, which I can change with my DX7 - quickly on the fly. With DX7 II that would be 64...

dude, DX-7's are great controllers, but thats it. The internal sounds on them are SO bad its absurd. If you end up getting one, the action and wheels are nice, but use it as a midi controller. If you have to use internal sounds, don't use any of the electric piano sounds (disgustingly bad rhodes sounds) or the harmonica lead. No matter what you do to mask them, they'll still sound really 80's and bad. This being said, I do use a DX-7 as my lead synth controller in my dream theater tribute band THE SCENES FROM A MEMORY PROJECT, and its a very good controller.

It had some unimpressive preset sound.
But I don't think it sounds bad, its difficult to program that is.

I wonder what it would sound like with
a Kurzweil KSP8 FX processor.

I heard some demos... I think im going with the last few comments.. It might be a nice controller and stuff, buttah, keys and bender and buttons dont make the DX7 such a 'wonderful kickass legendary synth'. If im correctly, the whole synth is a 'dry' synth as well, wich would require me to be in posession of an effectprocessor.
And frank, it might kick ass with such a processor i agree. Reminds me of what Jens Johansson seems to do. But then the processor is the piece of equipment that deserves the recognition. No money for one either.
I think im gonna save the money to buy me a Musical Santa Doll for christmas, sounds kinda like that bell-Rhodes version of the DX-7! :D
no DX-7 for me :)

Sorry for digging this old thread up again, but I was recently reading the DX7 manual and found out a cool thing:
You can assign a program number to each of the 32 voice select buttons, so if you control external devices, you don't have the problem that you can only select 1-32, this may save you some rearranging ;)
Quite a cool feature to select all the fave patches via one click.

Well, since this is up again, I'll tell you what happened 2 days ago:
I was carrying my good ol' DX-7 from my own room to this where this computer is at. Well, the power cord was of course lying in the ground coming behind me and BAM! It got stuck between a door and the floor, and simply got ripped off from the board itself. There's like 0.5 cm cord coming out of the DX-7 at the moment. It's a sturdy board made of steal, but it appears that a 20-year-old power cord isn't that good anymore
Well. I'm off. Gotta go get it fixed now. 8)

:D Well Ive got a DX7 only as VST Instrument for my computer. So in that case it makes sense for me. Only using it in the studio, but it truly has some cool sounds!!!!
Nevertheless I wouldnt use it live. Ive got my Korg Triton, my Technics KN200 and my GEM Promega 2. Thats enough on stage!
