Hey guys
i was just wondering wether playing malmsteen songs in the keyboard actually increase your speed

One of the main reasons i picked up keyboards was because i could'nt match malmsteen's speed in the guitar
But i personally feel that it feel that it is more fun and easy to play his songs in the boards

Do you guys Agree? :D Or Disagree? :x

another useful thread :D

btw, vinod.. stop thinking that if you play malmsteen songs you'll get quick as it.

1) Malmsteen plays quick only because he doens't pick every note. He uses a lot of legato. I've an instructional video (Hot Guitarist) with an interview and lesson by Malmsteen... I know at least 10 guitarist that sounds better then him and quicker at least.

2) Speed is useful only when you totally CONTROL it. If you don't own your technique, you can obtain only a bunch of sparse notes.

3) If you wanna SHRED, you've to strenght your fingers. Without a proper training, you can seriously risk to damage your tendons.

see ya

Having Rythmn comes before playing with speed. Playing in time with a metronome or drum machine, practicing playing 1/4, 8th and 16th notes in time to build up your sense of rythmn, without good rythmn, you may as well forget speed.

Real speed with accuracy on a keyboard or guitar comes in time, by practicing your instrument and making actual music with your instrument.
I did'nt wake up one morning and could play fast, its a realisation after however long it takes you. Its something you should not be thinking about, it WILL happen in time, how long it will take depends on your enthusiasm and commitment to your instrument and music.

Playing other people's music can help you learn riffs and licks and maybe give you ideas for your own music but in order to play a lot of malmsteen music, you need to be pretty speedy and accurate in the first place.

A lot of speed playing can also come from effective technique using both your hands to play a long fast scalar run or a rapid fire lick, having both your hands working in sync as one can make a keyboardist play things only a guitarist can dream of...

My Final word, you can have all the speed and accuracy in the world but if you are not musical with it then your efforts will fall on deaf ears cause nobody will want to listen to it or enjoy it. Working on melody, harmony and phrasing techniques is also a more important quality to have than being able to play fast. Playing fast should be the last thing on your musical agenda, unfortunately it always seems to be the top priority of many musicians (me included when I first started out).

i agree, no matter how fast you play or how many notes you can squeeze into a bar. if your playng without good technique or musicality its pointless.

DO NOT think that i am sying that shredding is none musical!!!

practising scales and arpeggios will increase your speed. and trying to play his songs would be stupid, especially on keyboard, since 1) it is impossible to duplicate the picking techniques of guitarists on keyboards, learning music written for another instrument rarely help you work on the techniques needed to get good at that instrument 2) you cant go from 0 to 60, yngwie can only play that fast because he has spent thousands of hours of his life practising a lot of deep purple and scales/arpeggios/sweep picking/other technique exercises, etc 3) if you really want to get good with your speed/technique, play some classical like mozart sonata's or bach two part inventions/preludes and fugue, which focus less on harmony and more on individual notes/scales

playing fast is kinda like...

Posting a whole bunch of useless topics.
You can post like crazy, but if there's not much behind them, they don't mean anything ;)
