View Full Version : Keyboards with Key-action inbetween Semi-Weighted and Piano

I am wondering if there are any good keyboards with 76- 88 keys that have an action that is slightly heavier then my current keyboard (alesis qs 7.1, a standard semi-weighted key action board) but not quite as heavy as that of like the fully weighted piano action 88 key korg triton. I want a keyboard that is as light as possible in overall weight (for transportation) and has keys that are somewhere inbetween this. I have played a few digital pianos that are exactly like this, with the keys being full in size (instead of having space at the bottom) but just generally a bit lighter then a piano or most 88 key synths. This is what I would want, since I just think the qs is a little too light. I figure with this slightly lighter touch, the board in general would be lighter then a typical 88 key, and more to my liking, since I like to feel a full key beneath my fingers, but the really heavy keys are a bit to much, because while that is nice for just piano playing, it doesnt feel as good for me for other things. does this exist? anyone know what I am talking about at least?

I think the QS8.x isn't as heavy as the Korg hammer action - and it is, in fact, lighter than any other I've tried (maybe Roland RS-9 and Oberheim are as light). I like my QS's semi weighted action anyway, even if I don't even think of studying a score without a weighted board (thanks God I still have my Korg EC500 digital piano - not as heavy as today's weighted boards but still working fine (the piano sample is awful but who cares, it's training what counts)).

hrm yes, ive considered the qs 8.1, though part of this might also be that I want to upgrade from the qs... plus that keyboard is still a bit heavy in both weight and key weight. I do have an old digital piano with hammer keys as well for piano practise, I am thinking more for live use/band practise...

this is kind of like what I am looking for, it is very light in overall weight, has full keys, but isnt full hammer action:

however, id prefer that it wasnt a controller cause then id have to deal wth a rack unit, id rather have it be all in one, but if this is the only thing of its kind I just might go for it. I dont really need all 88 keys either but it seems every 76 key models are semi weighted without full keys..

The Roland A30/A33/a37 feature 76 semi-weichted keys each. Very nice feel!

How about a Kurzweil PC2, 76 semi-weighted keys which are really nice (I have played one!). Has a great set of sounds and you can get the Rom blocks as well. Not fully programmable but If your not a hardcore programmer then its not a big deal. You may even be able to get a 2nd hand one on ebay or something...

damn this looks like the perfect thing for me, semi-weighted but full size, and not heavy in overall weight, plus I really dig the kurweil sounds, price I see on ebay isnt bad (around 800 bones), and yeah I just want some nice basic set of sounds, im not good enough to spend time learning how to program/programming versus just practising the damn thing :) ill have to try and play one but aside from the purple color it seems awesome . hopefully my alesis will get me SOME cash in resale...

while those roland midi controllers seem nice as well, as I said Id rather not have to deal with a rack, and it would seem a kurweil with kurweil presets would sound better then my alesis. thanks though!

You may want to look for a used Roland RS-9.
88 semi weighted keys. The action is full, but not heavy.
I use one in my live rig.

Ah, sorry, I didn't notice that you didn't want a rack ;9

I would recommend a PC2 as well, I played one few weeks ago, great sounds and action! Especially the KB3 sounds are very nice, since you can control them in realtime.
