View Full Version : Whispering Synth Lead

I want to create a synth patch I need some help with! (using an Access Virus A)

It should be a kind of "whispering lead sound" with lots of movement in it. Something like the sound you hear when putting your ears on a railroad and a train is coming near (don't leave your head there too long, btw.) but with a tonal character.
I want to play a slow melody in the background of a song so has to be very moving and interesting, but not obstrusive.

I recognized a sound in "In The Name Of God" (6:25) which is quite close to what I mean (it should be more tonal)

Hope you can imagine what I mean and give me some tips!?

mumble... you may try to heavy filter a noise oscillator, then using LFOs to modulate filters cutoff.

I tried that. But it just sounds like "filtered-noise-with-oscillator-on-top"
The tonal Oscs don't really mix with the noise (same with every waveform and mix situation I try) you always hear the two components. And it sounds soo cheap!

Ah yes, the problem of finding audio "glue." I find that you can get noise to blend better with tonal stuff by:

1) FM'ing an oscillator with noise, rather than using pure noise
2) Ring modulating noise with the oscillators
3) Filtering the noise extensively (BPF, vocal filter) before blending (i.e. get the noise to sound like a voice before it gets mixed with tonal information
4) Passing the combined stuff through dsps and filters that cause phase shifts to get them to blend. Some dsp's (e.g. exciters) are very good at it but leave their own tonal signature
5) A good quality tube or solid state device is great glue

There is also the laborious process of adjusting volume and filter settings to track well through the expected range of pitches and velocities. Hope this helps,

Jerry

Forget to say that sometimes romplers have very interesting vocal like (i.e. filtered) noise samples. Nothing to say that you can't layer more than one synth together. Yes, it's a pain but you could call it modern modular chic.
