This is my first full song I've ever recorded, and the first time I've ever tried any multitracking. I've posted little snidbits of other things before but it was always everything coming from my keyboard at once, so this is my first "real" attempt at anything.

I programmed the drums (that's the best patch I had), played bass, and did all the key tracks on here. All the sounds (minus the bass) are from my Casio WK3500.

It's not CD quality or anything, but it turned out pretty nice for my first attempt at something like this. Let me know what you think. :)

All solos were improv, btw.

Edit: new link...remixed a few levels...

Nice! Did you play the drums on the keyboard too or were they sequenced? Oh, and this is the first time I ever hear the infamous bassgod_88 in action.

What program did you use to record the song btw?

EDIT: Yay for the WK-goblin!

EDIT2: what organ patch is that at 2:00? It sounds cool!

Working a Casio... it's amazing he got as much reverb as he did. :P

Says he programmed them.

Edit: Oh, and Liquid, awesome job, bud.

Excellent Job Liquid, your lead sound is coming along nicely and the programming of the bass and drums were top knotch. Liked also the middle break improv with the organ....Just one thing I missed was the rythmn guitars......but........I added some (not exactly like the original!), I hope you don't mind, I could'nt help myself.

Since I'm running the lead through an external distortion, I have to use reverb from the recording program (Cakewalk Guitar Tracks). There is *some* reverb on it, but I didn't want to overdo it. Listening now, I don't think a little more would have hurt at all...

It's a new one I've made that wasn't posted at progsounds...I can do so sometime if you'd like. :)

I can put on tons of reverb onto any patch I want, it's just running through external distortion that makes it so I can't use any (aside from what I can add in Cakewalk).

I don't mind at all.
My sound isn't working right now, but I'll restart sometime later and listen.

play the proper solos though! the sound is cool but it'd be much better with the proper solos

I personally don't think you can play the solo's of Ice9 note for note on a keyboard, there's a lot of tapping and legato playing which is impossible to do on keys to get that sound. I think by improv'ing what you cannot replicate shows a lot more musicianship and creativity than playing somebody else's music note for note and not putting any creativity in yourself...I did a cover of Satriani's Crush of Love not so long ago on keys and improv'ed some of the lead playing which I could not replicate and I thought it turned out o.k, its good to put your own personality on covers. :D

I would personally never program a lead solo or its techniques involved, I'm talking about live playing and not typing in notes and pitch bends etc, but you can program realistic guitar phrases with the right sounds. Just check out OVERDRIVE, a 6Gb distorted guitar library by Vienna Symphonic Library and check the demo's -

http://www.vsl.co.at/english/pages/profile/news/horizon_demos.htm

So if programmed, you can get close - but its hardly the same as improv...

Part of what I wanted to do was give people a chance to hear my own mind at work as opposed to just playing notes that were written by somebody else.

Oh, about the drums...I'm not sure I know the difference between programming and sequencing them. All I know is that I played them on my keyboard and recorded it...would that be called programmed or sequenced? :?:

i think that programming a solo is bullshit, a gibbon could do that.
if you cant sit at the board and play it live, its not real.b
i agree with you putting your own feel and personality into the song, but, there are some certain points in the solo wich i think should be played.
like the part at the beggining where it keeps going back to C# from
A and Bflat. i think the trick is to put your own feel into the song without changing it completely.
i hope you dont take offense man, just giving my honest oppinion.

No offense at all. I know what you're saying, even though I disagree. It's funny you mention that one part, because I did use those notes for that very reason about 1:24...I landed on the A, then did the triplets with the C#-Bb-A pattern. Not the same thing he does, but sort of a subtle hint at it.

What I meant with my question was that did you play the drums in real time or did you program or sequence them one by one?

I played them in real time...just did the whole song from start to finish on drums, then added bass, then the melodies, then the backing parts, then the solos.
