View Full Version : Favorite analog synth leads

Got any favorite recorded analog synth leads? (preferably prog). They don't have to be an analog synth, but something that sounds analogish.

I think my favorite is the 5 octave minimoog run by Rick Wakemen on Close to the Edge (end of the pipe organ section leading into the reprise of the main theme). Requires some clever changes to the oscillator pitch knobs as you go.

Cheers,

Jerry

Ayreon: Into The Electric Castle, the leads in practically every song are AWESOME.

My current favorite would have to be Ryo Okumoto's groovy moog section in All Is Vanity, off of SB's Snow album.

practically everything on the Ayreon albums is analog´isch. Very good sounding stuff on those.

Yes, Scrap, the solo in All Is Vanity is really cool. I wouldn´t be amazed that this was written by Neal instead of Ryo.

My favorite all tim would be Jump from Van Halen. On of the famous analog solos EVER.

for some reason I realy like the synth solo on Rush's "Subdivisions" just before the guitar solo towards the end..

Ryo's leads are totally choice stuff!

He usually plays 'em on the portable midi controllers
that you guys usually rip on.

Yeah, 6 wives rocks. 8)

Frank, which portable controllers does Ryo use? Does he appear to control timbre (cutoff, ring mod, etc.) as well as pitch (vibrato/bending) from them? Do you know what synth's he is triggering when on the move. Is it an analog or an analog-like tone generator?

He sounds interesting. It takes guts to wear those things.

Jerry,

I got to meet Ryo on the M2000 Tour and was very impressed
with his setup. I mean, anyone who brings around a real
Mellotron is a serious keyboard dude.

Pardon the pun but here's a small sampling of his stuff live and studio.

Live: Hammond B3 Organ, Korg CX3, Leslie 145, Mellotron M400, Mini-Moog, Korg Trinity, Kurzweil K2000 Sampler, Casio AZ100 Remote Controller, Roland M-120 mixer

Studio: Hammond B3 Organ, Leslie 145, Mellotron M400, Mini-Moog, Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, Kurzweil K2000 Sampler, Korg CX3, Korg T2, Korg Trinity, Korg TR Rack, Korg X5, Roland D50, Roland S550, Roland MKS20, Roland Sound Canvas, Roland Jupiter 8, E-MU Proteus, E-MU Pro-Formance, Yamaha PF100, Yamaha RX5, Yamaha QY20, Yamaha QY20, Yamaha DX100, Yamaha CBX-King, Moog Prodigy, Hohner Clavinet, Alesis D4

I'm going to have to revisit this thread because I can hardly remember any shreading right now. I need more coffee. I can say that any lead ripping done by Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman or Jordan is up for grabs. I'd also suggest you check out Alex Argento as he's quite the ripper, and seriously burns on lead.

But one that sticks out is Eddie Jobson from the UK Live album. He crafts his leads to fit the song so he usually doesn't go all out, and one example is in the mid section of Rendezvous 6:02. I always seem to bump the volume up a few db here, as there's a lovely piano build leading into a simple but sizzling sawtooth lead that makes my hair stand on end.

Oh here's one from waaaaay back.

It's Day One by Jan Hammer from his 1974 album

The First Seven Days.

Talk about tumultuous.

Also, remember that since his Minimoog was monophonic,
he had to multitrack in order to achive his thick, chordal textures.

I cant think of the name of the song but its from Ayreon's Universal Migrator, Pt. 2. Its the song with Bruce Dickinson, the keyboard solo in that song rules.
