Nah, it's not too bad - they can play "Perfect Strangers" better then most bands ;)

It'd be funny to see them cover their OWN songs on different instruments though... Overture 1928 with JP on Drums, JM on Keys, JR on Guitar, MP on bass and singing and JLB on Tamborine. *I guess he'd not change anyway*
Heh...get the 5 years in a live time video - it has a quick clip of them playing ;)

I had the chance to see one of the rare performances of 'Nightmare Cinema' and their one and only UK performance.

Here's a review that I wrote of the gig, years ago

DREAM THEATER at Manchester University Union Hall, 11th April 1998

After a break of a few months, DT returned to our shores and to my hometown, no less, just in time for Easter - so there weren't any accommodation worries for me as I traveled up from London to stay with my folks.

I can't believe that they chose to play in the 'Union' - the hall of my old University, which never had the greatest acoustics at the best of times. The last gig I'd seen there was 'Gary Glitter' in about 1981 but for a band with DT's sound I'm sure there were other venues they could have chosen.

Anyway, the hall was packed out - maybe there were only about 1000 present, but this was the UK. I bumped into a few old friends and took up position at the back of the hall. The sound wasn't bad, but being in the main thoroughfare to the bar had it's disadvantages and took the edge off the show for me. I hadn't got my act sufficiently together in order to be able to catch the support act 'Ruddess/Jorgenstein', which I have a feeling I will come to regret, but at the time, my mind was more on the gig in France the following week, where they would be playing with Vanden Plas and Angra.

The setlist chosen was more-or less 'Set 2', as used on this stage of the 'FII' tour. They began, as usual with ACOS I and II, which is as great an opening piece of music as you'll find anywhere, only to follow it with 'Just let me breathe' and 'burning my soul', which don't figure among my favorites. Sure they sound OK live, but there is something 'forced' about them, which I don't like.

'Take the Time' improved things and received a warm response from the crowd, who seemed particularly familiar with the 'Images & Words' material. As the song closed, the band broke into 'Freebird' and doodled around with a number of other covers, leaving the crowd a little bemused. 'Hollow Years' followed, though Mike was unable to use the 2nd drumkit, due to the highly restricted space available on-stage, and it sounded pretty good.

'Crack/Puppies' led into 'Lie' and got things cracking again, then 'Peruvian Skies' gave us another opportunity to appreciate the dexterity of Mr. Petrucci on guitar. 'Pull me under' produced a great roar from the crowd, who seemed glad to hear something that they were familiar with. 'ACOS IV' and 'Ytsejam' (also very well received) kept the mood going and then the guys produced the killer 'Trial of Tears'- one of the songs I just love to hear live.

The set seemed much shorter than usual and it seemed a real shock for it to have passed by so quickly. Nevertheless, despite a less than overwhelming audience reaction, the guys returned for the obligatory 'Metropolis Pt 1' (huge cheers from the audience) and then 'treated' us to the only appearance in the UK of the legendary 'Nicky Lemons', where the band swapped instruments and Derek Sherinan took up the microphone to sneer his big 'hit', the punky sounding - 'I don't like you'. Obviously the majority of the audience did not have access to the Internet, since this 'event' took them completely by surprise and produced, once more, a rather bemused reaction.

Everything returned to normal for 'Learning to Live' (huge cheers again) and then 'ACOS VII' closed things impressively. I love this band, but things didn't seem right tonight. It felt like they were 'going through the motions' just a little, though the small stage must have been limiting. I also felt that the audience was not that familiar with all of the music they played which have showed itself in their reaction to some of the tunes and the larking around onstage, if nothing else. I have some sympathy for DT though, UK crowds don't seem so open to new music as they used to be, and its hard work when you get no help from the UK press. All in all, an OK night for DT, let's hope the Bourges gig is better!

They played the European Set 2 with a few minor adjustments as follows:

No Anna Lee
Hollow Years was played without the use of the 2nd kit because the stage was so small
New Millennium wasn't played

The setlist as modified for Manchester:

ACOS I & II
Just Let Me Breathe
-------
Burning My Soul
Take The Time / Freebird / various extracts of covers
Hollow Years (piano solo)
Crack / Puppies
Lie
-------
Peruvian Skies (guitar solo)
Pull Me Under
ACOS IV Winters
Ytse Jam (drum solo)
Trial Of Tears

Encores - The usual Medley:
Metropolis
Learning To Live
ACOS VII Sunset

There are probably some inaccuracies in the review, but its too long ago now for me to recall anything in greater detail.

I guess that for a start 'Nicky Lemons' was the name adopted by Derek for the performance rather than the name of the band, since 'Nightmare Cinema' was used several times (and a website for it existed briefly).

There's probably some fan on the ytsejam who remembers this better than me.

Thanks for the link, it's my website :-D

For the concert of Petange (Luxembourg) the 4th November 2002 it was Jordan's birthday. John gave him his guitar and he did a nice litte solo. There is a photo in the n°36 of the fanzine of the french fanclub (Yourmajesty :D ) The photo was taken by Iris & Erik Hulsegge. I was at the concert and I had a camera but it was full  so on my website there are photos of the concert but not of jordan playing guitar :(

The nightmare cinema stuff was all pre-jordan.. Derek is actually an awesome guitar player (definately the most talented of the group when they played the alternate instruments); he was actually playing guitar as his main instrument for the period before he joined up with DT.

I got the info the other day.
I hear James played the drums on Metropolis Tour(Yokohama) in 2000. Hmmm...Jordan may have played the guitar. This may be a wrong information, but I've been looking for the bootleg of this concert.

Nightmare Cinema is a warped version of Dream Theater. It features John Petrucci on drums, John Myung on keyboards, Mike Portnoy on bass, Derek Sherinian on guitar, and James LaBrie on vocals.

They made several appearances during encores in Europe, the US and Japan, starting with the November 1st, 1997 show at the House of Blues in Chicago. Nightmare Cinema's setlists consisted almost entirely of Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers", but Ozzy's "Suicide Solution" was played on one occasion in Japan.

Once Derek left DT, Nightmare Cinema also ceased to exist, with Mike saying it was a special thing between that line-up of the band and it won't be repeated.

And we all know Mike is a serious fellah.

It sometimes features Mike on vocals.

Hmmm, we won't be able to see Jordan playing the guitar on stage but we may hear it in his solo album in the near future. I hope so.

Hi, Welcome here and thanks for posting the video.
I believe that it was a show in NYC, Nov.22 in 1997. Though that makes me laugh (JP's drumming is hilarious!), all of them look good.

@RemcoG
We need to ask Jordan whether JM is a capable keyboardist.

In my "Favorite of favorits" JR song, Jordan played a guitar part already.
But it might not count for you because the song itself is too much awesome beauty....

I heard the song is for the birthday of his wife. Beautiful.

I hope they don't repeat it. Would be disrespectful to Derek, I think. Saying that it was special to that lineup, and then later suddenly ignoring that.
