Well, this is a real event:

Yesterday I went to a kind of party. There, sometime we manage to talk about music. When there was my turn to say what kind of music I like most, I answer Progressive. A very joung girl looked me with wonder... "What is progressive?", she asked me. As I was trying to explain what the progressive music is, I understood that she had no idea what progressive could be (I think that she couldn't think that it exists). First, I tried to explain progressive by saying a couple of Progressive Bands, but she didn't know them. Afterwards, I tried to count some characteristis of the progressive music, but she had no ideas what chords, rythm, harmonies and these things are. Finally, I gave up. I just couldn't explain to a very young girl what progressive music is.

Soon after, I realized that even me, couldn't say that progressive music is, including everything about it.

I still found it difficult to explain. Maybe that happens because all the matter is a little bit complicated. Maybe you just can't explain that the progressive music is to someone who doesn't know anything about music.

music that changes from song to song, within songs and from album to album.. Has concepts and ideas within the music and lyrics that aren't common and somewhat experimental, and USUALLY having extensive technical ability... - that to me is progressive. :)

This will remain the most mystical metaphysical question on this board.

What is progressive ?

Thou shalt hear one thousand words and see one thousand images. But the supremest knowledge stayest hidden in the Halls of Progressive Music. And so shall we continue to strive for wisdom and enlightment in the hope that maybe one day, someone comest to unleash the secret which hast driven our neverending quest ...

Progressive is a word that too many people try too hard to define.

Music is music.

The mystery of Progressive is the same as the mystery of God. You'll never know. You have to become a saint to understand it (read the metaphor :D) and still humans won't comprehend.
Deceit.

Progressive Rock is a regressive music of the 1970's which attempted to combine pre-existing (classical, jazz, folk and rock) idioms into an appetising stew. It was aided in it's effort by a circus atmosphere of heroism. Hence, long songs and instrumental prowess.

Neo-Prog is even more regressive in the sense that it attempts to build upon a foundation which was laid, then discarded more than 30 years ago.

Despite my definition I like them both. :D

I just don't think Progressive (noun) is progressive (verb).

Progressive to me is stretching beyond common rock song structure(not that there's anything wrong with that-Jerry Seinfeld :D ) and experimenting with form, musical genres, etc. It allows for so many different avenues of creativity and can be what you make of it which is what is intriguing to me.
