Nowadays the Korg 01/w and the Poly6...
I have an Alesis QS8 aswell, but I find it a little heavy to haul around...
I know it could be worse, like lugging a B3 and a lesli to every gig, but it´s bad enough as it is...

Depends on what kind of gig I'm doing. My next gig on November 2nd, all I'm bringing is my RS-9, being that it's a solo jazz gig. But, if I'm gigging with my band, I've got the RS-9, minimoog voyager, and my trendy Casio CTK-650 connected to my laptop with various softsynths and samplers.

Roland XV88 with EV5 expression pedal, DP6 Damper pedal, and generic switch pedal.
Thats about it. When I watched Jordan's instructional vid I opted to create custom layer and split maps for each song. Some songs I dont have to change tones just move my hands or use the exp pedal. Others require tone changes.
Ed
Live I'm using a K2500XS keyboard with a N1R sound module.
At home I have a A90ex, a N5 and a M1Rex sound module.
I'd like to use the piano and organ sounds of the A90ex, but carrying the K2500 is hard enough, I don't want to take a second 88-key keyboard with me :-)

Playing Live with "Streets, a Tribrute to Savatage" My Rig is a Korg Triton Studio 61, a Korg Karma, Yamaha EX7 (My Most Beloved Synth!!!), and my Old Roland E70. (I know, I know, But I've had this Board for sooooo long now, I just don't FEEL Right if it's not in the Line up Somewhere! LOL)
The Live Amp Rig is a Old Peavey Mixer (Soon will be Retired though I haven't any Idea with what yet. Any Ideas?), a SWR SM900 Amp, SWR 4x10 Golitah Cab, and a SWR 1x15 Son of a Bertha Cab.
I haven't Found any other Amp Rig that works Better then the SWR Rig. It REALLY cuts Though LOUD Drums and Guitar!!!
Who says that Us Keyboardist Have to use a Little Keyboard amp or just plug into the PA, live.
But I Have to admit, Carven has Come out with a 1000 watt 7 channel Keyboard Amp that Looks Interesting. I may have to check that Puppy out!!!

N5!!! \m/
Just an N-364 (also AI2 synthesis)... I feel jealous reading your entries....
N-364 is like N5, and it has a floppy unit... right?
My live rig and home equipment both consist of one keyboard... Korg N5...
I think that playing only one keyboard live is really cool... don't have many things to think about....
...and it's a good solution if you have a limited budget... :D
N5 however is pretty hard to use live... :?
especially when the buttons stop working so good...
Drusillus
10-31-2003, 03:35 PM
Vlakey I'm a little unclear... would you recommend an N5?
Everlasting_Rain
10-31-2003, 03:37 PM
Well, I don't know very much about the N5, but from what I've heard, yes, they're very similar.
And yes, the N-364 has a floppy unit, which I find really useful as I can use the combi banks to put my patches in a different order for each concert. That's the main use I give to it. Another thing is that I can put the midis (if they're not too long, like ACOS) directly into the sequencer.
Shreddy
10-31-2003, 04:54 PM
I have an X5 which is very close to the N5, the sounds are very nice. Typical Korg, the pianos are thin but other tones seem to round up the unit.
The keys on the X5 were crap (casio feel), looking at the N5 it appears to be the same keyboard case which means that its keys might be the same. The N364 might have a nicer feeling keyboard. My suggestion is to go out and test the boards.
Ed
The X5 doesn't have the same case as the N5. I'm using my N5 for about 5 years now and love it. It doesn't have that much features compared to other keyboards, and it's low price of course. I'm still using a lot of sounds from it, for doing cover-music I never had problems, and I don't think it sounds bad 8) but it depends on what you want to do with it of course...

True. A change of bank is 2 clicks of 2 diff buttons, and then the patch itself is 2 more. And when you try to do it fast you often screw up.
I played on this school thing a year ago, and instead of number 09 (a lead sound  ) I went to 90, that was a really quiet, slow attack, warm pad sound

-Korg Triton Le 76 (simply love it, I can reach much higher speed with its keys)
-Roland Ax-1 (only with the Hard Rock group, I can't play on it with the prog metal one...I mean, I need all 76 keys with it!)
I'm gonna get another keyboard some day (probably aiming for Alesis QS(?) or Roland (I'm still too stupid to deal with a Kurzweil (tried it but it seems you need a degree in Physics to take out some sounds)))...when we start to play continuously live, 'cos in studio the VSTs are doing a great job...XPhraze is my favourite, even if I'm looking for Hypersonic.
At home I'm using my old Korg EC500 for its weighted keys (to train on something when I need it) together with Le sounds.

I took my board to a rehearsal with guitarist Neil Zaza
over the weekend. He had no prior knowledge of this board
and has always favored Kurzweil sounds, ADAMANTLY!
In a nutshelll...
he loved it!!!
He enjoyed the fullness of the sounds like the piano and strings
and even thought that the analog pads and comps were
more fresh and current/modern sounding than the sounds
off my K2600XS. I was able to switch between some complex
Performances in mix mode flawlessly with no
interruption in sound, just like on my Kurz. A part of me thought that he
would freak out at the change since he is pretty set in his
ways as far as his preference in synth sounds but seemed
to embrace the ES. NowI think he wants one too! (ha ha ha).
No Neil, you can't have mine...
go get your own!
BTW...I'm not getting rid of my Kurz anytime soon,
and even if I did...it would be for the new K3000.
So...don't even think about it Majesty! :P

Mine Usually:
Korg Triton Extreme with MOSS
Alesis QS6 with Stereo Grand Piano Card
Ultimate Silver Apex Keyboard stand
Yamaha MG10/2 Mixer
Proel cables with neutrik plugs
And 2 Korg PS1 pedals
I really like the Triton/QS6 combination because they don’t sound anything alike, true the alesis lacks all of the bell & whistles of the Triton but its not as edgy/sharp sounding and it has been with me for many years, gigs & sessions (there affordable but build like tanks) and it does some tricks very well, I would only get rid of it when I find a QS6.1 in mint condition
M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 (master controller)
Roland GR20 (for connecting guitar to the setup)
Laptop with a bunch pirated/free VSTs in Ableton Live 4 (also pirated)
I wanted to keep it simple, because (1) I have the guitar setup to worry about and (2) I'm lazy, so one controller and stolen software seemed the way.

Mine would depend on what kind of music I was doing.
Very basic but well rounded...
EX5
For some jazzy fusion type stuff probably...
Rhodes 73 Stage (with Vox wah, dbx tube preamp, phaser, and run into eithe rmy JC-120 or Fender Bassman 10)
EX5
JX3P (with PG-200 of course, and run through my Ensoniq DP4)
TG77 (for those awesome Elektric Band type sounds/general FM stuff)
For rock oriented stuff...
EX5
JX3P
TG77 and/or D50 (with PG 1000)
maybe my PK5 bass pedals (contolling either the EX5, the JX, or my Alpha Juno1)
maybe my EX800
maybe my SQ1+
For full out Tangerine Dream style electronica...
EX5
JX3P
Alpha Juno1
Rhodes
Ensoniq ASR-X
D50
TG77
FB01
PK5
DP4
various other effects
maybe my Hammond J112 (depending on how big the gig was and if it was needed, its got that great 60s transistor organ sound a la early Pink Floyd)
Actually, I would love to start a TD style band with 1 or 2 other keyboard players, a drummer, and maybe 1 or 2 other people (bass or guitar for instance, or even something like violin).
Of course, if I could just have a Motif ES8 or Fantom X8, a PEK, the TG77 or an SY99, and a CX3 (or some other clonewheel), and the PK5, that would be pretty much all I would need for most situations.

Its called proper programing
exactly.
Since I've moved to drums, two other guys in the band are playing keys too (along with guitar), so the amount of stuff I actually have to play is a LOT less than before. Basically, I'm just filling in stuff with my left hand (while right hand and foot drumming) while both guitars are playing. Octave-wise, I have it set to exactly what I need to play in that part of the song.
In both rigs, I made the effort to make sure that all my sounds, splits, and layers programmed down to the exact notes needed for whatever song is going on.
Plus, for a few things, I actually have some of the drum pads programmed to trigger chords and single notes that I wouldn't be able to get to if I were to have to put a stick down and play the keybed. I also have the release/decay set up exactly where I need it to be so I don't have to worry about making sure a sustain pedal can hold sound between notes.
I'm probably the only guy I know who plays a moog and a mellotron (both VST) with drumsticks.

yeah, Bozzio had some when he was with Zappa, too

........ *passes out*
I uh... turn on my keyboard.. and when I wanna switch patches I press a button
I'm a gearhead and I love all this complicated midi junk, so I like to dig as far in as possible.
When I was playing keys full time, my pre-programming made my shows actually pretty brainless. All my patch changes were actually completely automated (I didn't even need a switch) by my laptop. Depending on where I wanted to be facing in whatever part of the song (usually giving cues to different bandmembers or something), I'd have my splits set up so that every sound would automatically be in the most convenient section of whatever keybed that hand was under. Most songs usually involved 8-10 different sounds (or more - spread across 3 rack modules, 2 hardware synths, and a bunch of softsynths), so the less I had to think about on stage, the better.
What I did/am doing is really not that much different than how Jordan has his equipment programmed. To me, doing it the "manual" way is really no different than driving your car and putting it in park, shutting it off, and getting out of the car at every stop light and stop sign. You'd be suprised how much easier it makes your life.

yeah, that's what I figured. You would think that Wakeman and Anderson would be able to cover everything else (did Anderson actually have a board onstage during that tour? I can't remember)
