I was talking with Enigma about the As I Am vid we did the other day and we then had the idea of doing a better quality mp3, with keys and vocals (hopefully).

Here's a sample of where we're at... Dave used Jp's solo for this mix.

As you can see we still need a singer.
If you have decent recording gear and want a shot at it contact Enigma:

If I was at home, I would record my voice...but...well, I'm not home, I'm 6 hours back on the clock.
If you can wait until Sept. 5th...:D

Dave, Felipe, and Thiago,

Okay, I got home tonight and wanted to a) test out the new A/D converter in my rack; b) get my vocal levels set; and c) listen to your As I Am track (over and over and over). :)

I put down some vocals (I only had a couple of hours so they're definitely not polished - I think the most takes I did was 4 on the first verse). I'll upload an MP3 tomorrow just for shlitz and giggles. My voice is NOTHING like James' (I don't think my voice fits the song at all) but doing this served alot of purposes so I figured I'd share.

Please try to have a wastebasket handy in case it makes you ill...

hey, that's cool man. Listening now :)

Ummm.. Autotune... I could see some work needing to be done but overall not too bad, you had the right idea with the panning... It's pretty cool.
Just gotta get that pitch down a hair!

Good job man

Hey Fossil...could you tell me which effects you used for each part? I mean, the name in "fx" language...flanger delay or who knows...well that kind of stuff...
I've never tried putting fx on my voice, but I have some nice vst effects waiting to be tweaked, used and abused.

Yeah, I listened to it fresh this morning in the car and I noticed a number of things. I missed a number of pitches and a number of attacks (but that's readily fixed by really spending time on it). The biggest problem is that going from my DAW to the car stereo speakers shows a big loss in volume and fullness of the vocals. I'm not sure if the trim settings just didn't export or if the affect is real. But this test has definitely been fruitful (I know I need to reset my EQ and "pump up the volume").

Oh, and it doesn't help that this is the first singing I've done in 3 years. Between changing jobs (twice) and building/moving into the new studio I haven't gotten to play for a long time. :)

Sure... um, let me start with the input. I have a AKG C3000 condensor mic going into a Behringer UltraVoice Pro [only effect module used was some light compression] into a Digitech Vocalist VR [doubled voice used for verse; doubled and one octave down used for everything else] into an ART dual channel 15-band EQ [set for my voice; still needs tweaked] into a Behringer Virtualizer Pro [bypassed for everything but the left-right spoken bridge in which I used setting 10 - I'll have to look up what the settings are but it's probably a bandfilter with some reverb] all into a Behringer UltraMatch Pro. This goes into the DAW where I recorded the tracks. All the vocal parts had some light compression added and some light EQ (mostly to rebuild some of the highs that I'm now thinking should not have been rebuilt). The verse had some VERY light chorus/delay to broaden the sound with only ~30% of the effect added and about a 15msec delay.

In hindsight - I shouldn't have used the Trim settings to change the volume (as can be evidenced by the too low of volume on the verses and the too high of volume on the last chorus). I shouldn't have used the doubled voice for the verse - it just amplified my missing the pitch (instead of hiding it like it's supposed to  ). It was all very quickly done and I really need to spend several days with the EQ. The biggest problem with quick-and-dirty is that everything starts to sound good when you've sung it over and over and over and... It's the next day when you really figure out what you need to change. :)

Unfortunately I don't own a complete recording studio with a rack for vocals, BUT ironically I own Yamaha Vocal Rack (and this time I have to admit Yamaha pleased me :D). You think I can come up with something good with that VSTfx and my Audiophile?

Absolutely! The only reason I have so much rack equipment (other than the fact that I like toys) is because my voice has very strange characteristics (most people can't believe it's me singing because it sounds SO different from my speaking voice). I have to scoop out the midrange and highs by about 10db and then boost the lows by about 10db. A rather extreme EQing. The Virtualizer and Vocalist VR are really just bonus effects - not really for sound molding. Same with the UltraMatch (though it's not for effects; it's an A/D and D/A converter). The UltraVoicePro is sweet because it has phantom power, limiter, expander, compressor, de-esser, etc. all built in.

By the way, Glass Prisoner over on JP's forum did a great job applying vocals to the track.

@Fossil: I still think you should make your best take and send it to Enigma for remixing...

I was hoping to redo the tracks this last weekend, but I had a rush job on some CDs so I didn't have a chance to. Hope this Labor Day will give me some time to do it.
