That scary time we all eventually experience at one point in our lives...I go up to college this upcoming Saturday to embark on a musical journey that will probably kick me in the ass, but regardless of that...

how many people here remember what they felt like when they first left home for college and how was your experience? just curious.

You'll be fine. College was scary for a week. Then it quickly became 'the greatest phase of my life....ever'. Seriously, it's the best because you get to do whatever you want to do and you have minimal responsibilities.

Where are you shipping out to?

Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY...about 5.5 hours from home...my brother is actually having more coniptions than I am, but he's 12 so it's understandable.

Its a good time man! Going to scholl is the period of your life where you will have the most free times. Leaving home for it is also very cool because you don't have anybody left to tell you to make your bed in the morning or wash the dishes ... well maybe if you have a roomate he will tell you :)

The thing is that from now on, you're on your own! But you'll get used pretty quickly to go shop for food, cook your stuff (thank you Stouffer's!), repair some stuff in your apartment... It is a very good moment in life! For me it was also a time where I had to open myself to more people, break the nutshell... You won't have many choices if you leave from somewhere you don't know anybody!

Well, good luck and enjoy! These years pass so fast...

yeah, man...i'm going into my senior year of college...and let me tell you, it goes by FUCKING fast!!!! enjoy it, man...college really is the best time (at least so far, for me)...but the thing to remember is...even though your education is important, "learning to live" is even more important while your in college because it's the first time you really discover who you are when your family and friends you've had as a security blanket your entire life are stripped away (sorry for the cheesy DT pun, but, hey, this is the JR forum). anyway...it's not as scary as you're probably making it out to be, but it's okay to be scared at first...cuz you'll get used to it anyway. remember...you're surrounded by people in the same boat as you are...use that to your advantage, and enjoy!

well I didnīt went away, so I donīt know how itīs like to leave home for college.

But the experience of college is great. A few pointers though....

1. Balance your social and academic life... you canīt be all social or all academic.

2. Balance your academic and non academic activities. With no academic I mean stuff like being in a drama club or stuff like that.

3. Mind your grades. If you plan to study a master or a PhD itīs crucial to have decent grades.

4. Participate in stuff like students concil... you know stuff like that. I did that and it was a blast.

4. Have FUN.

yeah, pretty exciting and nerve-racking at the same time, huh? just remember your not the only one goin through this. there are a bunch of people (including me) who are in the same exact boat as you, so use that to keep an open mind and not be afraid to make new friends. im sure at the school your goin to youll find a lot of people with common interests as you. Good luck with everything man. Hang in there, i know how you feel.

P.S. Spock's Beard's album, "Snow" rocks. You should get it. Just got it the other day, its my first cd of theirs ive ever heard, and if you dont have it, get it. sorry for being off topic, but im listening to it right now and its rockin. if you get this, i assure you, you will have a good time starting off college

yeah man, what everyone's saying is true... it really is the best time of your life. I didn't have one single moment of fear or uneasiness about being away from home or leaving anything behind. Pre-college life is the worst of any time in life, maybe with the exception of when you get old. Now you can FINALLY break free and live your own life the way you want to live it. You got to work your ass off though, especially from one piano major to another - you gotta practice like there's no tomorrow.... but college does go by VERY fast so enjoy it while it's there. Just think - all those hours of practicing, you are doing it cause you WANT to, and of all the things you could be doing in life, you get to play piano!!!!!

Rock on and keep in touch.

PS sorry I haven't Immed you I never have time to go on, but feel free to email if you like
