View Full Version : Keyboard Newb - Triton Le (76) vs Kurz PC1x

Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum and I was hoping I could get a little advice. I'm looking for a keyboard that is more suited to rock but has nice acoustic and classical sounds as well. I have about seven years of classical piano under my belt and that's why I'm considering the weighted keys and full 88 keys of the PC1x. On the other hand the Triton Le which is comparable in price (the 76 key version) has alot of features I like (joystick mod and pitch, nice sound options), but dosn't have the feel that I like and is somewhat too touchy\ keys have a plasticy feel. The two main factors of my desision are going to be sound quality\different types of sounds and programmability. If I could get some help here I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! :D

There is a Triton Le of 88 weighted keys (RH2 Real Weighted Hammer Action), maybe you'll like it better than the kurz. Donīt buy the triton if you are just going to play piano and rock piano. Triton is a better option if you are going to use lots of different sounds, just like Jordan who uses every damn waveform available in his kurz or triton.

I'm sorry, I wasn't very clear with what type of music I'd be using it for. I'd probably be using more for alot of different sounds not necessarily just rock piano. The Triton Le 88 key may be out of my price range at the moment. So I was wondering how the sounds compare on the two as far as quality and variety. Thanks for the response! 8)

Well, I decided on getting the Triton Le 88 key even though it was $600 more. I just ordered it from Musiciansfriend.com ($1800 plus free board cover, stand, and shipping) and should be getting it around Friday-Sunday. I'm really excited about it and I look forward to joining the keyboardist community! Thanks for the advice. Cya! :D 8)

And if you're not satisfied the sounds of triton (especially pianos) you can
always buy racks! Like this:

The Triton Le88 includes the EXB-PCM08 ROM expansion built in, which is a very usable piano sound, as demonstrated by this sample (http://www.korg.com/downloads/mp3/EXB/exbpcm08/Interstices.mp3). :P

I'm getting really excited now! I can't wait till it comes in! :D The one complaint that I heard about the Triton Le in reviews was its piano sounds were somewhat weak. If this is true can't I also either do sampling (if I get that addition) or buy a ROM expansion? Sorry if I messed up some terminology, I'm still relatively new to this. :? Oh, and cool pic Viking! 8)

If you notice, it isn't the same piano sound as on the album. Jordan provided a MIDI file to Korg for playback. This particular version, provided by Korg, has no post-processing on the audio track - it uses a preset program, (ClassySwtchPiano) which is included with the expansion, fed right into a DAW. See Korg's website (http://www.korg.com/gear/info.asp?a_prod_no=EXBPCM08&category_id=1) for more details.

As I mentioned above, the 88 key model of the Le comes with the 16MB EXB-PCM08 piano expansion built into the factory ROM. This same PCM ROM is included in the Triton Studio and Triton Extreme (the Extreme also has another, additional 16MB piano ROM as well). If you are unhappy with the piano sounds, you will have to sample your own, as the Le series does not support any of the EXB-PCM expansion cards.

And, on a sidenote, here's a little background on the smoke/mirrors and debate about Korg's "bad" piano sounds, just to keep opinions in balance:

I believe it is a trend. And it all probably started at some music
shop some years ago, where some famous keyboard player was having a
workshop. And in his fake British accent (cause that's also punky) he
said, "No, I tend to like the piano sounds on the Rolamaha, right,
right, cherrio." Bullocks, cause some crazed fan went home and sold
his M1 for a very cheap price. When the guy asked him why he was
selling his M1 so cheap the man replied, "the piano sounds on this
thing is not right, right, Cheerio." Ever since then, the word spread
to the wrong few, and Korg earns a bad rep.

Cheers
Mike

That's funny.
Okay, I bought a Yamaha S80 before my Karma because of it's
perfect (to me...) piano feeling (= sound and keyboard).

But the guy at the local music shop told me, it happens quite often
when known American groups, e.g. gospel, soul groups come
over here, they insist on getting an M1 for their gig - because
of the *piano* sounds.

My perception is, that the stand alone pure upright piano sounds in
the Karma maybe aren't as good as in other keyboards, but:
there are plenty of good sounds which are pretty useable in
the mix.
Something the ultimate piano sound probably does not provide.

Honestly, when it comes down to it, NO sampled piano is going to sound like the real thing, so it's pointless to think about realism. It is, however, important to consider timbral colouration of your sound. This is one reason why the M1 piano sound is so popular.
