According to John Petrucci's tweet this morning:

http://twitter.com/#!/JPetrucci

Dream Theater is in the studio. Apparently they just aren't going to bother telling anyone who the new drummer is. I'm actually starting to get a little pissed about this. I know it's their band and their right, but keeping your fans in the dark like this is a little harsh.

*Rant over*

i'm willing to bet the two cents i'm about to give that the reason it's not been publicly announced is due to music business/legal shenanigans and paper pushing and not the individual musicians' desires.

i could be wrong, though. in which case...who cares? i dont see the point getting all upset or caught up in the drama about it. they're great musicians working on some new music. great! we'll hear it and enjoy it when its done. what more does there need to be?

Good they are excited about recording. IMO news about the drummer is at the bottom of my list. For a change this record isnt about a drummer.

in an odd look at this event

Youtube video comments are no longer going to be ranting about labrie's voice. Poor kid can rest after 20 years of pain =P
Instead, the (very lucky, and somewhat damned) drummer, is going to be compared to mike, and they are going to basically rant at him no matter what he does

In other news, the recording process, i'd say this new drummer won't really have much to do with any of the music created is a bit of a shame.
however it will be interesting, seeing Rudess and Myung closer to the for front,

The label (i assume) and DT (obviously inspired by Portnoy) have been getting increasingly metal the last 5 or so years, i wonder if with Portnoy gone, and a new drummer, and more freedom all around, this might go the opposite way

What ever happens, im quite interested to see where it goes.

I guess they won't say the drummers name, because A...it could change if the other band members have conflicts,
and B, they want to make a big announcement at a crucial time

I really just want to know now however.

Awesome that they're in the studio, and I agree with King Ellesar that it's probably legal reasons keeping them from announcing the drummer.

And in response to Sparkey and everyone else making similar comments on the issue, I'm going to simply say this: What's wrong with Dream Theater being metal? I like their metal stuff and I wouldn't have a problem if the next album is metal. That said, I also love their more proggy stuff. I think with every album (EVERY album), they've managed to find a good mix of both. While some have leaned one way or the other, the mix has been good, and I don't want that to change too much, because otherwise it just won't be Dream Theater anymore.

*End second rant of the thread*

I don't really understand JP's tweet, because according to JR's tweets he's still in China..

Of course the new DT will be a metal album. Listen to Labrie's solo record if you want to know where his head is at. Petrucci can obviously bring the metal. Have some faith.

Yeah your right, they are all very metal these days =D

I just dreamed some funky soul drummer came in, and shit went crazy prog

But nothing is wrong with metal, don't get me wrong, i was merely interested to see if with a new band member they found a radical new direction, but its unlikely

in the mean time than

I feel that the band deserves a pat on the back for their exemplary behaviour , unlike Mike who's forgotten the fact that they had been mates for 25 years.

Can't wait for announcement !!!!!!

If DT features screamo like on LaBrie's album I'll have second thoughts about buying it to be completely honest. Just my own personal taste is all.

My least fav aspect of Static Impulse too. I think we're good as long as the new guy isnt Wildoer.

Ditto. I'm hoping they come out with something super proggy!

I actually love Static Impulse, and I love the screaming on it, but that's what side projects are for. Dream Theater is not the place for death or hardcore vocals, and now that Portnoy is gone, hopefully we've seen the last of it (or should I say attempts at it)

If DT features screamo like on LaBrie's album...

Oh bugger!

I've just bought it on his name alone.

Still, I'll give it a chance...

Just having a listen to Static Impulse now and I love metal vocals. But the screaming on this album is absolutely appauling!!

Would have been better if they had a guest female vocalist or something instead of those pathetic attempts of screaming...

Have to say I'm loving James' CD despite my earlier comment about the screamo vocals - not really my cup of tea, but Mr LaBrie's voice itself is excellent and great songs and playing.

It'll hold me in stead till the new DT album comes out...

Yeah, at least JL is getting some relief, he's an amazing vocalist if you ask me and if you try to sing his songs, it can be absolute hell on your vocals. As far as the metal direction they were in, I really liked it, I think that DT is supposed to be a blend of metal and prog. That's what they started out doing. However, I do think that more prog needs to work its way back in instead of being overpowered by the metal part of it.

+1 ironwolg

He put his voice on the line and performed after the food poisoning incident .That is the ultimate sacrifice any singer can make for his band !!!!!!
Appreciating JL's singing is as hard as understanding DT music .

Images and Words is my favorite album , so I'd love to see some more prog stuff in DT music .
