Hi there,

Im going to buy kurzweil ribbon controller next week. Is there any way to manage it to work with korg tr or yamaha motif es?

Every single answer would be appreciated!

Ahhh... not that I'm aware. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Kurzweil ribbons use their own special cable port thing that isn't universal across brands. I'm not entirely sure tho so see if anyone else replies too lol.

Correct, because it can be splitten in 3 parts.

Kurzweil made a standalone ribbon controller years ago called the Expressionmate - they're not easy to come by, unfortunately.

They use a cable I have never seen used anywhere in a PC or music equipment before so I'm pretty sure you can't use it with a non-Kurzweil.
I used to have a pretty good "open source" ribbon controller which was not THAT hard to get: The Doepfer R2M(Ribbon to Midi). It comes with a control unit with Midi In&Out(&Through, not 100% sure about that) and is quite good... however, it can not be split.

Yup, but price for this thingy is pretty terrible. Any other option?

You can get USB ribbon controller from here:

http://www.eowave.com/controllers.php?prod=59

if you use VST or any sort of PC/Mac setup, but that wouldn't really be uesful for anything other than that. I also must say I've never tried a USB ribbon, so I'm not entirely sure how to set one up either so definitely take a look around at other options.

I have what might have been the last expressionmate ever sold by Kurzweil. It has MIDI connections so you can use it with your Motif. I bought it for $350 new. Send me a message with what you're willing to spend if you want it.

You can use it if you midi the kurzweil up to the ES....

Anyway, if you have some extra cash you could buy doepfer ribbon, those are pressure sensitive too. They are just a bit shorter though.

Warning:
Don't buy the Doepfer if you're looking for easy to-be-dosed pressure. I managed to get some different values out of it, but it's definately not something you'd want to control something important with cause for the higher values you need to apply quite some force with your finger, sometimes even to a point where the finger hurts when you're not even at 127(maximum) yet(I managed to get to 120 without feeling pain, but meh).

To me this sounds great. Talk about feeling score...

I hate it when I bang some keyboards hard the dynamics aren't there. Bigger range of dynamics the better =), you can always tweak the curves if you want....
