Hi guys,

My CD-Rom drive just exploded  . It gave a big bang and the stench of electricity imediatly came out of it.. I unscrewed the thing afterwards and found out a cd totally ripped to shreds in it as well.

I was just installing something and then BOOM wtf lol :(

Anyone got an idea how this could have happened??

Anyways, I need to get a new one. Perhaps a CDR-drive this time.. But, are audio CD's even suitable to play in those drives? I heard some stories about CDR-drives who only work decent to write cd's with, and totally suck when it comes to installing programs and most of all, playing AUDIO-data..
Supposely very slow, or stuttering and things like that...

I hope some of you wizzguys can help me out, a recommendation for a nice cdrom/CDR-drive would be great too. I dont have much money for this and it already took a retail-CD with it :|

Thanks

PS: move to geartalk if nescesarry

Hey Iccy, that's a real bad story! It actually must not happen that a CD-drive explodes. I'd really recommend to contact the manufacture and request a new one for free, or you're going to charge them!

That would be my first step, I would wait before buying a new one.

As for CD-R drives, I have to say that I have my CD-RW for almost 3 years now. That's the only CD player I use for playing audio CDs and I never had any problem.

Yeah, CD-RW drives are pretty much the same for playing Audio CDs, mine stoped working a few das ago but it had like three years of intesive backup burning with me. Anyway i bought a new one and it`s a CD-RW and a DVD unit at the same time and I can tell you that it works fantastic!

Hope that explosion has`nt screwed anything else

I saw an episode of mythbusters once where they hooked up a CD drive to a 20,000 RPM power router drive shaft to see how CD's would explode. It was pretty funny....

Having been in the IT field for a while, I've seen some really bizzare things, but never a shattered CD in a drive.... maybe it wasn't completely on the center post and slipped off?

I have an external CDrw made by Iomega:

It's my only drive, as my soundcard takes up my only 5.25 bay in my machine... I use it for reading and writing, and haven't had a problem yet. I'd say an internal connected directly to your IDE bus would be more solid than my USB 2.0 drive.... Fear not.

Do you really think you have a case requesting a new drive? I just blew up my Lite-on SOHW-812S, cleaned out the shrapnel and it turns out the device isn't working anymore (can't detect the fact that there's a cd in it). :( Won't they just say it's the manufactorer of the cd's fault (Sony)?

I also have a lite-on CDRW and both the CDRW and the DVDRW units worked better than my previous CDrom when reading/ripping audio cds... untill the DVD blew up of course

Probably the cause of the problem was that you had a crack in your CD, and the high force made the CD crack. Last time i had a problem like that, the CD drive made a noise like a banshee and ejected the CD at almost super-sonic speeds. Rather scary.

How fast a CD drive were you looking for?
