welll, if you buy train of thought and watch the bonus videos (accessible off of www.dreamtheater.net), you can see the practice area they rented out for those writing sessions. but, really, for the last few albums (not counting ToT), they've just written the songs in the studio (and they used Beartracks up until Train of Thought). there are even some videos floating around from beartracks, located in new yOrk.

so they don't have a normal "practice area." they either rent one, use a studio, or just practice during soundchecks on their tours...at least as far as i know

Yes, what hepiroth says is correct. Did you know that they wrote the Glass Prison here in Offenbach, 10 minutes away from where I live? :D
It was during the soundcheck for their show on April 1st, 2000.

They don't have a regular rehearsal space - they just rent one in a rehearsal studio when necessary. I know they've rented one in NYC for the next few days while they rehearse for the upcoming tour.
