Actually I know what a budget is, so the subject doesnt really have anything to do with the actual post, well sorta... you see I just turned 17, i dont have a professional synth like a Kurzweil or a Korg Triton... I have a Yamaha DGX 500, an 88 key portable grand... it was 500 bucks. I am pretty sure that there are more young people in the forum, and I was wondering how you manage to buy lets say a Korg Triton, or a Yamaha Motif... just curious. lol

well, the thing is that it depends on your age, parents, job, credit line, etc...
I got my 2500 by trading a computer when I was like, 19. I got my Triton for free by being "endorsed" so to speak, so I didn't have to pay anything for that.
Otherwise, all my gear was CREDIT CARDS!! lol
Find a band with much gigs, forget your free weekends and travel around every weekend evening :-) took me about 6 months to get my K2500XS (+ a good offer to buy). But don't hurry, if you get the best synth now, what would you get after that...? 8)

I had a DGX-200 (hmm... it still lies under my bed...) and i got tired it's
"lack of features"-desing. I played about 6 months with a DX-7,yeah,
and sounds were .... .But then i managed get my pennies together
and bought Triton rack, witch controller DX-7 is as long as i get money
for 88-key controller. I think i know your situation, you have a
DGX-500 witch has good presets, but wanting a synth where you
can "tweak" sounds, and SAVE THEM (witch can't be done on my DGX-200)
You could consider couple of alternatives:
-Maybe you buy a rack synth, it's not that expensive if you want good
quality. Examples:Roland Fantom XR 1300$, Triton Rack 1400$, Motif
Rack 1000 $ ,Or older Roland JV-1080, JV-2080.......... and wait when you
get money for good controller.
-But you may buy a good synth also, but it's more expensive(not as
expensive as controller+rack). Maybe more suitable for you if you find
some synth witch has good sounds and good key-action.
Work hard, Lot of money, Good synth

I would agree with LastViking - get a nice controller you're comfortable and go down the road of modules. I'm personally inclined to go with a Korg X5 or Kurzweil K2000 as a controller, although that decision hasn't yet been made once and for all.
In terms of affording it, work work work! ;)
And I don't agree with the credit cards thing. Credit cards are the worst thing you can do; the biggest difference between my finances now and my finances when I was 20 is that I don't run a balance on my credit card more than at most two months, and as a result, I'm not bleeding money like a stuck pig in interest. It frightens the hell out of me to actually add up how much money that I bled away in interest; in retrospect, I'd wait until I had the readies.
Oh, and definitely go for used equipment. There really isn't any particular need to go brand new if you're on a tight budget.

I think some in here missed the actual question, because Harmonic Paradigm did actually not want to know what he should buy, but how you/we got the money together to buy what we have.
I got my first keyboard, a crappy Yamaha PSR-73, for my birthday. Nothing special since it cost about 180$ when it was new. My second keyboard was a PSR-730 and I payed it with the money that I got for my confirmation.
Then came my Roland XP-30, the last keyboard I bought, which I payed with the money I saved - it's really SO simple. :D
But trading is something you always should think of! When you buy a new synth, it is possible that you don't need your old synth or other things anymore...

Anyone wanna trade DGX-200 to Kurzweil PC1X/2X?
anyone...?
none..?
EDIT: LOL :P
I got my money from my parents, weekly allowance... and saved those until i was able to get that triton.
BTW I played X5D yesterday and i didn't like its action very much (mini-casio-like) but sounds were good.

You think this is reliable enough:

It's a pity, because I haven't got enough money yet, but
it's a damn good offer. Only thing is that i'm bit of suspicious
for that big font over there. That gets me think.
