Hello, i'm a new JR.com forum member and a long time DT fan, i'm also a long time member of the Vai.com forums (i think some of you post there too)...

anyways, i'm interested in learning to play the piano, and i would prefer to teach myself... i don't really have the spare $$ for a teacher, and have had good success teaching myself guitar, I have pretty good techinique on there and a good understanding of music theory.

Does anyone have any websites that demonstrate proper piano technique and have tips helpful for the beginner (i.e, i can play some stuff pretty well on my right hand, but i can't even play simple stuff using both hands)

Also, my weapon of choice on this endevour is a Yamaha Clavinova electric piano...any comments on these??

PS: it says on jordan's MIDI page about a 6 minute solo he did for the DT DVD, but i can't for the life of me find it on the actual DVD...someone in here said it was 'before erotomania', but erotomania is at the beginning of a title, there's nothing before it???

Hi there, welcome to the forum!

JR's keys solo is on the 3 cd scenes from new york.

and about the piano, the white keys are normal notes and the black keys are the sharps  :P 8)

I think the solo you're referring to is listed as being "before Erotomania" because it was on the concert (and is on the CDs)... the video for it is on disc 3 of Live Scenes From New York, not on the DVD.

I like Yamaha Clavinovas for the most part, yeah, they have a nice action. They do vary in sound quality, but for what they're designed for, they're fine. Not v portable though ;-)

If u really want to learn piano in a formal way without a teacher. You should get some excercises such as hannon, they are not hard its just about being patient and playing stuff really slow so that u develop a good technique.

I guess its all about being patient..

Say no to Hanon, they have no musical value and just finger movement practice.
Practice scales and Scerzny would be more useful.
I heard that George Winston is a self taught pianist, anyone could clarify this?

You could always join the Jordan Rudess Keyboard Conservatory ... one time 50 buck fee, and there's tons of information on learning to play on just about any level. That's my recommendation.

By the way, do I get a commission for that?

Send me an email off line and I'll give you some tips for getting started.
Kudos to you for wanting to go it alone. It will be difficult, but I think I can get you pointed in the right direction, from there you may find you're able to teach yourself more than you imagined.
