Wish List

Moog Little Phatty

Main Gear:

Nord Stage 88 (Classic)
E-MU 1212m Sound Card
Mackie VLZ3-802 Mixer
Korg Kaossilator
Korg DS-10
Transversal Flute Yamaya YLL722 (or something like that)

That is all hardware I have, I do have some VSTs (Waldorf Edition, Korg Legacy and some freeware) but I do not use them. I mainly use my NS for everything except drums. So far I am using my brother´s Macbook Pro to record the flute with its decent built-in microphone. Even though I admit the NS synth aint that great in specs it sounds quite close to some real analog stuff. I mainly use my soundcard´s effects, most of the stuff I´d ever need are in there. Plus I rarely want to put effects into the NS´s sound

Wish list (getting those stuff by the end of the year):

A very good quality mic (in the 100-200 USD range, should be getting it by the end of next week)
DSI Mopho or Tetra (still in between choosing 4 voice, or mono with audio input)

Misc:

Monster Cables (best quality cables I could get)
Korg nanoPad and nanoKontrol (I bought them cuz my midi interface has some troubles with my PC)
A sustain pedal and a Roland EV-1 Expression Pedal

There you go, quite a basic setup... Still one of the best rigs around this forum has got to bey HammondToby´s

PS: Lately, I have been recording quite a lot, trying to build a solid album. I know I posted something in here, but it was utter crap I was under the heavy influence of sleepiness. I have built Two songs: One using some waldorf Attack, some basic guitar VST and NS. And one using just NS and Kaossilator.

Well, it's not THAT much :redface: Ok, yes, I'm a 'pro' ... what ever that means. I make music for a living, including piano/synth/organ lessons, recording key tracks and playing in bands. I tend to use speciallized gear, as I do a lot sessions and have to play unprepared a lot sounds, so this is the reason for having that much stuff.

Hammonds and Rhodes' stay at home most of the time, so they do recordings. On stage the set is red!

first of all the keybed. the electro has organ keys and the stage has piano keys.

additionally, the electro can have samples on it, like the nord wave.
the stage has synth sounds, and can also be split and layered, which the electro cannot (the electro CAN be split for two organ manuals though).

short: electro is more expressive on organs and rhodes/wurly/cp, and the stage is more expressive on piano.

i'm getting the rest of them too (C2 and wave)... just to be weird. they all have different applications, and I doubt I will ever use them all at once on stage, though it would rock. :P

i'm getting the rest of them too (C2 and wave)... just to be weird. they all have different applications, and I doubt I will ever use them all at once on stage, though it would rock. :P

Man You ARE weird :wink: Although honestly I dont see why getting a C2. The NEIII has quite a similar sound, but the NEIII is kind of a "single manual" thing. The other only difference I know of that exists between them are the physical controlers, one extra manual, more interface thingy. Oh and the C2 has a Sampled Pipe organ. Honestly (and do not take this the wrong way) I would rather buy something that would instead broaden my sound palette. Maybe a better mixer or PA if nothing else fancies you. You could buy a PC3 like most people here. :rolleyes:

Also Kurzweil has truly gone back again in the market. Pc61 is almost the same price as the M3 61, also the PC3 amd the M3 76 are almost the same price! Both Motif and The Fantom G are more expensive by a couple hundred bucks. I was surprised!! About 3-4 months before the PC3 came out. The only Kurz was the K2600 which was around 3000-5000 quite pricey, that is why people seldom bought them new. That was barely a year ago I believe. Now, being so price competitve, seems to be getting Kurz back on track. Really the only thing the Kurz is not superior is in the User interface. and IMO the best UI is the M3´s. Although to play music the UI aint that important. In both sound and functionality the PC3 is truly the best!!! Perhaps next year I get myself a PC3-61, or simply a PC3Le.

Still, my next thing in the shopping cart is most likely a Mopho. That or either a Blofeld with sample expansion or a Tetra.

They are probably not superior, but I guess they would have if they had had the same 50" Full HD 1080p LED widescreens as the other brands tend to have. The PC3 UI over the Fantom G UI any day.

Obviously you never played a Hammond or a two manual clone. To play this sound right, you have to have two manuals with 61 keys. I'm learning bass pedals at the moment, to fully use my C3 (or in the future the C1). The additional controllers and the second keybed are vital for the Hammond, even in rock. I don't want to be rude, but Jordan isn't the best organ player on earth, he uses organ sounds, but doesn't play them like an organ (and it wouldn't fit in DT world by the way), so his playing is nice for prog, but not for organs. Is you want to learn about playing Hammond right, look at this guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hT8dAeHe7Ow&translated=1), he fully uses his B3, including bass pedals.

Yeah. They seem like going "wow, we can have colors, wow, we can have pictures, wow, we can implement a DVD driver so they can watch movies while playing". Take away some of the fancy stuff and cut the prices! It's the sound that matters, not if it can fly backwards and take a backflip while serving coffee on a silver plate.

Gusdon't take this the wrong way :wink: but clavia has a pretty broad sound palette when it comes to traditional keyboard instruments. I'm not all that interested in the classic synth sounds like moog etc. I like listening, but not playing. Also, not everybody here are prog players, and i also did in fact say that they all have different applications, and any combination of them could fit almost any setting. And i said that it would be unlikely that i'd use all of them at once, but rather various setups for various bands.

To quickly comment on the organ thing, 2 manuals...when playing actual organ music, is very nice to have and pretty much a necessity as you get closer to mastering the sound.

^Show off! :P

Anyway, I'll stick to keyboard gear for now and leave out the guitar stuff...

Yamaha:
EX5
A3000 (waint to be a SCSI organ donor to the EX5, then will either be used for effects, or sold)
TG77
FB01
YSS-30

Roland:
D50 w/PG1000 programmer
JX3P w/PG200 programmer
Alpha Juno 1 (without PG300 :()
PK5 MIDI Bass Pedals (just used this weekend with the JX since we played a gig without our bassist)
JC120 (for guitar, but can be used for keys if needed)

Ensoniq:
ASRX (a bit beat up, I might trade up to a Pro soon)
SQ1+ (mainly use as a controller these days, but it has some nice pads and acoustic sounds too)
DP4 (use this a lot for effects for the Alpha Juno and JX)

Korg:
EX800

Casio:
CZ1000

Hammond:
J112

Fender:
Rhodes Mk II 73 Stage
"Mr Burly" Bassman 10 (70W 4x10 all tube "bass" amp from the 70s, sounds KILLER with the Rhodes, similar to a Suitcase, minus the trem/panning)

I think that's about it.

Then I have a pair of KRK Rokit 6 G2 monitors and a matching RP10 G2 sub. Recording for right now is a Fostex VF16, but since I just recently upgraded computers (was using a 1.4GHz and now have a 2.8GHz with a working CDRW drive and a DVD drive, both comps have 2GB of RAM though), I will probably be getting an interface and some sort of DAW in the near future.

What gave me up :rolleyes: You know, if you are willing to help, we can fix my "situation" :wink: I agree with what you say, but I believe there are probably "cheaper" ways of turning your NE III into a double manual, get a 61 key (with a keyboard similar to that of organs) with 8 sliders midikeyboard and you´re set I think. Although if you got the money, the C2 is absolutely a better option!

don't take this the wrong way :wink: but clavia has a pretty broad sound palette when it comes to traditional keyboard instruments.

So true!! Still about one year after I got my NS and playing it at least 4 hours a week (i tend to be "busy") I find "new" sounds that are quite different from what I previously had taken out of it. Like two days ago, I somehow managed to get this ultracrunchy and very growly clav sound just playing with some wah and the leslie sim. I am still struggling to master the organ sim!! I know there is some kind of "technique" to it, but I rather experience by myself. What I have found truly helpful in the NS is settin the morph funciton to the drawbars, found it more useful rather than manually moving the drawbars.

And i said that it would be unlikely that i'd use all of them at once, but rather various setups for various bands.

Missed that XD I guess that is also a reason why Toby has so many instruments, different setup depending on the gig... man he has such a dreamy setup :biggrin: I am honestly satisfied with just a Nord Stage, but then I get gear lusty XD specially whenever I got cash lol

Okay, so I have a very very humble list compared to you guys:

Keys:
Kurzweil 2500X with all Roms, full P-ram and Ram with External Zip/HD

Computer:
Fully loaded Dell XPS M1730 running Vista Ultimate and Sonar 8.0 Producer edition.

Audio interface:

That's pretty much it. I checked out Omnisphere, but I like my Kurzweil better (most of the things in Omnisphere I can program in my Kurz, except the samples themselves)

So yeah, that's basically it LOL

You have a full size Continuum? How much did that cost?

5290$ + 25% VAT, and shipping costs. I would estimate about 6800$ more or less. Quite expensive, but it was definitely worth it.

HOLY CRAP, i guess you really wanted one, i couldnt justify to myself spending that much money in something with no synth engine, but when you really want something.....

Actually, the Continuum has a few in-built sounds. I prefer using it to control my software instruments, though.

I don't know if I posted my gear list before. But anyways here we go. [ again?]
Keys:
* Roland Fantom G6
* M-Audio KeyRig 49 + VST

Random
* M-Audio Fast Track Pro [Soundcard]
* M-Audio Torq/Synchronize [software+soundcard]
* 2 American Audio turntables Direct-drive,..cheapest ones around.
* American Audio 2 channel mixer for the turntables

Amplifiers/monitors:
* KRK Systems Rokit Powered 6 G2 Bi-Amplified
* Torque keyboard amplifier. T250SK
* Marschall Bas state B65
* Peavey amplifier
* Fender tube amplifier

Guitars
* Keiper,..unkown type<--
* Phill Royer's Luther's bass,..unkown type.

,...shitloads of VST's which I downloaded and they all fail on satisfying me.

I wish I didn't got most of this stuff so it would save me lots of money and I would have a G8

Past:
* a really detuned organ which I played when I was 6-8 but I didn't play that one longer then 2-3 months at max.
* Casio CTK-550, gave it away for free to some kid, I fear he will be pretty good if he continues practicing.
* Yamaha Motif, [basic/classic?] basicly my uncle's synth.

Maximus, third demo in the list of mp3's. : )
http://www.korg.com/Product.aspx?pd=433

Kind of a weak sounding patch in my opinion (reminds me of the "BEEF, it's whats for dinner" TV commercial here in the states)... This could be done with just about any modern rompler with a few layers and splits.

I love it!!! Overdrive effect is more like a layer of white noise, and i would feel much better if there was leslie rate and balance settings. But for the money i am really really pleased. It's great!!!

@Maximus
I was thinking more about the Boss RT20.
Actually i do have a leslie at home. Some old Elka, with only treble rotor, and fixed 15" bass driver, but it needs some tuning up and fixing, been sitting in the workshop for months now.

And yet another addition: Kawai K1m tabletop module... :)

I don't think the patch is weak, I think the demo for it sucked.

I'm actually a big fan of this patch...pretty expressive when you get it under your fingers.

New Year´s Resolution just fullfilled. Just added a brand new Korg Ms-2000BR to the gear list :tongue:

I went to the music store to get some cables (I had some shitty generic ones, besides the mosnter cables, that just lasted one year :mad:) so since I was already there, I decided to try out some synths. I demoed the Roland SH-201 (nothing fancy, did not really tickle me), I tried the V-synth (original, but was the price of the GT from the web. Superb sounds, but somewhat pricy) I also tried out the Korg Micro-X (sounded much better than I expected but its features dont really justify it, sounds the same as a Triton, but lacks all those workstation features) and I also tried out the MS. MS was the one I liked the most after the V-synth :wink: , but not only that, it was half the price of a brand new microkorg!! In total, it cost me $301 USD at the current exchange rate. Sure, ain´t that cheap, but keep in mind that to get my Mopho from Novamusik I paid about $30 USD for shipping and about 1000 pesos for importation.

I was already considering getting a microkorg, if just for the vocoder. This one was a lot cheaper and has more realtime control. Just like I like it :tongue: On the downside, the knobs feel rather cheap, but I think they will stand just well wobly through time and not fall down. Although I could always buy some other knobs and installthem myself.

BTW I am also adding in a week or two a very good Studio Grade Microphone, already chose one, but cant remember its name. I would use it almost exclusively for vocals and the MS2000´s vocoder. I could perhaps record some flute on it...

Gus

PS: Now I plan to put some sequences into the MS2000 and the mopho, and just play some EP over it... or some pads ;)

Hi! My little gear:

-Roland D10
-Powerful MSI notebook (Renoise, Reaper, Kontakt3 which reads my 100piece Kurzweil sample collection :wink:, Atmosphere, Korg Legacy, Vienna and tons of free vsti)
-EMU 0202 interaface
-Behringer Xenyx 1002 mixer

Many of you know how big kurzweil fan i was. It seems its a little setup, but I don regret a minute I sold my K2500, and my heart didnt beat either when they announced PC3K or it wont when they announce the nex generation K2600. Kontakt has the patch hold feature, I have 2GB Ram for samples, unlimited resampling function, no polyphony problems, full midi integration, very stable system no problems, not even a glitch up to now.

I sampled the k2500piano board too with my programs, so I have that mighty kurz piano and it sounds faboluos with my EMU.

I was an avid laptop+vst+controller hater, but I had a little financial problem, I sod my gear, and I thought what if I try to build from free vsti on my laptop and I bought the ultracheap Roland D10 (which has a very good feel to me) and wow. I started melting together Osiris and EVQ Ultrasoniqe and it blew my mind, I realized that I only need juet a good audio out interface and voila. I bought an orchestra, a best of the best padmachine and the classic Korg M1 and Im in endless key heaven :D

We make our first album, its really in the works finally and I combined Atmpspheres Strings with M1 Universe and on my EMU it sounds megalofantastic, haha, even in live too!!! I autosample every patch made with vsti to Kontakt 3 for minimal CPU load and maximum stability.

I feel I finally found the best solution for my needs, I've lost my GAS feel totally :D
