Sweet! Any news on the style he's going for? Like, is this gonna be rocking metal stuff or solo piano stuff or what?
No matter, as he's damned good at plain piano playing and synth work alike.

Seems his approach is like Kurpij's... I just hope he manages to do a better job :)

He helped me buy the Bosendorfer PMI plugin. He's a cool guy in my book. Can't wait to hear it.

It's a pity that, even within Symphony X, he concentrates so much on classical styles (and even covering classical solos) - it's as if he was afraid to demonstrate his own music. His metal music really rules. I hope this CD will not be a show-off of "I can play this and that".

Georges, we'll hear if it is when does Piano Concertos are out.
I wonder if he really plays them like a trained classical pianist professional would play them..
Kuprij did well, but then again, his career is 50% being a classical pianist, performing solo like one. Sometimes this guy's too much about 'FORTE FORTE!!!!' though

Looking forward to hear it. I hope that Pinella will use more than his 2 usual sounds :)
By the way, Symphony X is now working on their next album.

This guy got the whole thing.
In fact, Vitalij Kuprij's groups have ALWAYS remained very underground, very...ctrl+c, ctrl+v, do you know what I mean?
Symphony X are the ultimate synthesis of Malmsteen's neoclassical style together with strong progressive influences - even if, at first listening, you wouldn't say they're influenced by the prog rock tradition (would you guess they're all loyal fans of Kansas?)...
They are my favourite group so far (I NEVER get fed up of listening to them) and...I can't really wait for the release date to come...

It's said that he will play all instruments himself. What about the orchestra for the piano concerto?
And the Scriabin etude is pretty difficult! :D

Listen to the interlude of Awakenings and tell me he's too focused on classical styles.

As far as i know it will be a double disc.
The first one with the piano concerto and the piano etude by Scriabin
The second one with instrumental songs
Michal Pinella - Piano and Keyboards
Michael Romeo - Guitars and Bass
Terry Bozzio - Drums
But remember that this is only a rumor.

well yeah, he does break away into other styles on there more progressive songs, and that is a good example, but you do have to admit a lot of his stuff relys on a bach influenced classical style, so as to give symphony x there symphonic edge...
Im looking forward to this cd though. he isnt really the leader of the band, so it will be surprising to see what this guy can do when hes the up front guy.

There you go.
SX are classical-oriented metal, so obviously his playing is going to reflect that a lot of times in their songs. That's not because he's too focused on classical playing, it's because that's the style of the band that he has to fit into.

But why should "classically"-oriented mean that one may cover old classical songs to the note instead of writing something classical instead ?
Jens Johansson manages to include such classical parts without necessarily covering them (although even he did some covering)...

Well dont forget, this is his first solo cd, so I think he might be trying to prove something, like how he can play classical songs such as that. And it seems like this will have plenty of his original stuff too.

A good classical cover can:
- prove you can play (as someone pointed out)
- allow you an opportunity to showcase a new synthesis of music, that incorporates the classical stylistic elements (Emerson started incorporating a lot of Ginastera's stylistic elements)
- raise the level of the musical content in your cd (if it's a well written piece)
- make your cd easier to digest with familar music
Michael Harris lent me a copy of an SX CD once. He said it was pretty classical too. Frankly I didn't see very much classical in there approach, but I think it's got to do with different frames of reference. To me, the 1970's prog bands put a lot more classical both into their music and the form (organization) of their music. Not that that's necessarily something to aspire to.
A good song is a good song.

Stepping out of his usual role as keyboardist/composer for the hugely successful progressive rock band, Symphony X, Michael Pinnella now has the opportunity to showcase his considerable talent in a new and more intimate fashion. Michael accomplishes this via his new solo CD, Enter Through The Twelfth Gate. Unbridled by any formula, Michael rollicks through this CD with reckless abandon. Soaring synthesizer leads, regal grand piano melodies and complex orchestral passages make this CD a keyboard enthusiasts dream-come-true. In a beautiful marriage of rock and classical music, Michaels virtuosity shines on this release which will have direct appeal to the growing Symphony X fan base and to fans of great instrumental music in general.

I just got this album. I actually got 4 albums, Feeding the Wheel, Rhythm of Time, Enter by the Twelfth Gate, and SymX's Odyssey. EbtTG is what I was expecting RoT to be. Because of that, I really like it, and I think it's a lot of fun to listen to and shows that Pinnella really is a very talented musician. I need to listen to RoT some more, and then I'm sure I'll appreciate it more. Though in the last year, my two favorite albums are still Frameshift and Ayreon!
I have the album since yesterday... a very good stuff :) :!:

P.S. I'm starting to like RoT, as I expected. Bar Hopping With Mr. Picky has a really silly main riff, but it's quite fun to listen to. 8)
