View Full Version : Does Jordan loves analog?

Hi to everyone, including Jordan who will hopefuly read this aswell.

I have discussed this with my girlfriend several times and I thought on discussing this here aswell.

From my standpoint of view Jordan is a master using synths, and the king on the digital synths realm; and not being sure about the reason, it seems to me that he prefers those above analog equipment.

I'm sure he likes analog synths and he owns some on his home studio, but why he doesn't include them as part of his live gear? Actually besides the Octavarium solo, I don't recall haven't listen to any musical section performed on his Voyager or Phatty on DT or his other recent albums (I haven't heard BC&SL). Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Considering my own taste, there are several solos for example in which I kind of miss a more analogish sound. Also in my opinion, the octavarium solo sound lacks aggresiveness and I would have prefered a more raw "dirty" sound, not such a clean one. But again, this is only a matter of personal taste.

I guess everything summarizes in the following question: If he has the possibility to bring any equipment he desires, why he chooses not to include any analog synth? Even an iphone is onboard!

Is it only a matter of his personal taste? Because I don't see technical issues regarding it.

Well I'm assuming the reason he uses more digital instruments is cause it simply makes life easier. He's always prefered having one main keyboard to avoid having his hands all over the place on different boards.

But he did have that massive modular synth that he used live. I'm guessing he stopped just because of the sheer size of it and difficulty in transporting (and he won't have used it for a lot of sounds in the set. So doesn't seem worthwhile)

Hope that helps you n if I'm wrong on anything... feel free to correct

Yes, you got my observation totally right.

I forgot to comment about that modular.
It's not my intention to criticise Jordan's way of doing stuff, but he has always thought practically. So, when he decided to carry an analog along, why use a massive modular instead of the voyager for example? For the type of sound he used, it was nothing a Moog couldn't have done, and it could have done it better I dare to say.

Perhaps a business situation, endorsement related?

I hope he doesn't feel offended by anything I'm saying.

Cheers!

If I had to guess, I would say what went through Jordan's head was, "Okay, if I'm going to use an analogue synth on the tour, it has to be juuuuust right. Oh, and kick-ass."

Which would you rather see Jordan play? A huge fuck-off modular, or a lil phatty?

P.S. Convenience is my guess as to the reason. The slightest difference in tone isn't worth the hassle of bringing it on tour and incorporating it into his setup. Not to mention that he can get just about any sound he wants from a digital synth as he's a sonic master.

I'd definitely say convenience and to simplify the rig. More gear means more setup, more to haul around, and more to potentially go wrong, and I don't see it's really worth it for the slight (if any) difference in sound. JR can sample anything he needs to his Oasys pretty well.

That's a good point there, he can sample aything if he wants/needs.

What about the convinience of studio situation? Under those circumstances there shouldn't be any problems.

I can think of 2 possible reasons:

1) He wants to keep things real as in being able to faithfuly reproduce live what he creates in the studio, (knowing in advance that he is going to be using digital instruments).

2) He has no personal preference for the sound prodcued by an analog machine, and thus there is no reason to use them on the recording.

I'm sure I've some videos of him in the studio with most of his keyboard's including some analogue ones.

Yeah, during Chaos in Progress I caught the Voyager and I think something by Dave Smith Instuments, an Evolver, I think.

I didn't watched that. So he actually used some of that stuff? I'll try to take a look at that.
Thanks.

Mae, Compatriota, Pura Vida!!
I'm sure that Jordan loves them, even, if you put attention in some videos you could see that he used them into his live rig...

But also, I'm sure that one of the biggest problems is the size and the weight of many of them...

Best Regards.
