What about it? I heard some demos and it seems to be really focussed on just danceleads, dancechords and blowage like that.
Am I able to use it as a replacement for a moog? Is it any good for some moog leads and synth effects used in prog?

The JP-8000 is very good for prog music!
A friend of mine has got one and its sounds are, even though you know that you never get can the very same great sounds, comparable to Moog sounds. Of course, you can use it for dance things, which you have heard in your samples, but this synth would work very good in a progressive rock band. But note that this is nothing for a keyboarder who wants to play Dream Theater! - You can't get any JR, DS or KM sounds on this thing. It's more for 70s prog, for example Yes recordings.
It is quite expensive, so check have it played before you buy it!

It seems that even Jens used it on the latest record(s)... Here is a little quote from a conversation we had at another forum:
The non-solo stuff (at risk of sounding a bit like Jörg when he describes things like guitar, vocals, bass, keyboards etc as "additional shit" ) is a lot of JV1080/2080, a lot of Halion (a software sampler running very reliably inside Cubase) and some JP8000 here and there. The JP8000 is a machine which I borrowed over the summer from Karppa from Thunderstone and which I quite liked. ISTR Karmila said he hated it though!
Don´t know what parts or songs he used it for though... Btw, Karmila is the sound engineer of the studio where Strato records... Don´t know how to value his opinion.. :)

This is definite a great board.
It has that VA sound, not true analog but would be great for
prog.
I am kicking myself 'cause I missed the Sam Ash blowout earlier
this year when they went for $399 plus tax.

Damn Frank, I think anyone here would of picked that up for that price. You have to keep me informed when you see the good deals.

Ed,
The Sam Ash in Buffalo Grove had that pricing back in Feb. 2003.
Hey, even I didn't know 'til after the fact (actually just missed by
a couple of days only). Had I known I would have picked up
both the board and the rack which were on sale.
That place is great for that reason, however, you have to be a
constant visitor. Luckily for me it's just a couple of miles away
from my home. That's how I scored a new Supernova II and
an Alesis Andromeda for ridiculous prices.

Oh, and Ed,
The staff over at that particular Sam Ash are MUCH more knowledgeble
and helpful than some the GC's in the area.
Shoot over an e-mail to me cause I lost your phone number.

By the way Ed,
You know that same Korg that KM used on Images and Words is for sale
at Sam Ash for about $150.00 right now.

I like the JP 8000 a lot.
However, for the money you guys should check out
the new Alesis Ion. I've seen it for as low as $649.00
and it is a great analog emulator and not just for the
money either.

Having worked at both GC and Sam Ash, I'm biased against Sam Ash for many reasons. In fact, they're the reason why I completely dropped out of the industry for a year, just because of my experience with them.
But regardless, if you find the right salesperson, who is knowledgable, experienced, and will work with you, it doesn't matter which store you're at. Retail music salesmen can be some of the coolest guys in the business, or the worst example of a car salesman.

Just a note, while it's true it's pretty impossible to replicate DS or JR's sounds on a JP8K, you can get quite a few of Kevmo's sounds on this board, especially the earliest stuff (WDADU, I&W).

I heard that board in a rock band and it sounded really cool I even tried one once (ok is was 3 years ago :)) but it sounded cool. You can do lotsa tweaking on it and you can get some pretty decent sounds.

I just favor the management over at the SA vs. the GC
in my own area. That's all. That is not truly representative
of how all Sam Ashes are.

Oh yeah I should mention that Michael Pinella of Symphony X has been using the JP8K as his main solo synth since Twilight In Olympus.

That board has a great, biting sound, and yes, another
shinging example of the JP used in a prog fashion.

Are you sure?? Ive been searching for info about Pinellas gear for ages.. nothing..
I expected him to use a korg though but if i can get THOSE sounds out of a JP-8000 then i want to HAVE IT!

I can verify this because I played his gear at PPUSA1 for their sound check! That was pretty cool.
He has lots of Rolands in his setup and a Akai sampler. I dont remember all of them but I think he also had a JV1080, and a Roland or Korg stage Piano.
You can get a good Jens Johansson lead tone from a JD-800 so my guess is that you should be able to do it with a JP-8000. Matt Guillory uses the 800.

Thanks Georges... Didn't know that it was so "old"...
I got mine when it first came out. I then had a D-50, JD-800 and a JP-8000; in 2000, I sold 'em all, and bought a K2600X instead, it was too heavy, so I sold it in fall 2000 and by the end of 2002 I got my final setup, namely a K2600r with a SP-76. Now I'm happy with that one at last ...
The Roland synths were all great but they were real synthesizers but unfortunately ONLY synthesizers. The JD-800 is definately a good buy as much as the JP-8000, on which you can just create so cool leads. You may check out my sound library, which contains lots of leads and a moog bass sound; that collection may be inappropriate for a techno fan but it's most definately useful for prog metal fan.
For all the future wanna-be-JP users, if you don't need the keys, go for the JP-8080, it has two more voices, a vocoder and a distortion effect, plus the oscillators have become more flexible. I'd go for a Waldorf Q or Q+ but they are also more expensive. The Roland is one of the best in its quite affordable price class; Virus and Q are both more expensive, and AN1X isn't really that great (the sound is generally too cold but definately evil, which can be great as well, imagine Marilyn Manson ...).

My only synth I ever bought was my Roland XP-30 and I'm glad to have it, because it is, in my opinion, exactly what I need.

Georges: I want to be able to turn the knobs and stuff realtime while playing live, so I assume the JP-8000 would be the best choice? I dont know if its even possible nor practical to do this however. And if its really usefull...
Having it on top of my rack means i have to remove my mixing panel a level lower as well.

The JP-8080 can also be put onto a table next to your synth, so that you can still play around with the knobs in real-time.
