View Full Version : Something is wrong with my MIDI.
I think my M-Audio 1x1 USB cable has problems. The USB light has always been a little "fuzzy" looking. My Keyboard (K2500XS) receives signals from the computer, but nothing goes the other direction.
If I'm playing on the keyboard I don't see anything happening. If I have the Kurz play a song the light on the M-Audio goes solid green, but the computer still doesn't show anything.
I could really use another keyboard about now so that I could test a few things.
Any Ideas,
-John O.

Sounds to me like there's something wrong with the cable. Well...it's cheaper to assume that anyway. If the computer isn't receiving any MIDI information that means either your cable is broken or your MIDI output is damaged. Do you have a friend with a keyboard or another Midiman that you can test stuff out on?
Beyond that I haven't got a clue as to what could be wrong. Did you cover all the obvious bases--i.e. make sure they're plugged in all the way, check your MIDI settings on the computer to make sure they haven't reset, and make sure that the Global MIDI settings on your keyboard are correct?
My 3 year old & 1 year old play on my keyboard. They "set" things for me sometimes. I did a hard reset. Would a hard reset fix anything that had been inadvertantly set? I checked out the XMIT page. It looked Ok to me. But to be honnest, I don't really know exactly what I'm looking for.
I've noticed that when I'm out of my recording program (Power Tracks) that the M-Audio cable appears to work correctly. I'm wondering if I've set something that causes some kind of MIDI loop were the computer & keyboard get into a vicious cycle of MIDI thru.

Check to make sure that the keyboard is set to output Midi data, it's not just been turned off inadvertantly. The power light on the Midisports does pulse irritatingly, according to the M-Audio site it's actually *designed* to... WHY?!? :? It's also possible that your recording software is not configured to receive on that input...

I've never used Power Tracks, so I don't know what the interface looks like. But first, some questions:
1) Do you have a Mac or PC?
2) Which OS are you using?
3) What is your MIDI setup? Is it simply a keyboard in and out to the M-Audio wire? Or is the keyboard MIDId to a module?
I have a PC running XP Pro. My setup is a Kurz K2500XS MIDIed to my computer using a M-Audio 1x1 USB cord.
When I'm not in Power Tracks the M-Audio shows activity comming from my K2500XS when I play. As soon as I go into Power Tracks, M-Audio doesn't show anything comming from my keybaord. I've checked the MIDI settings in Power Tracks and they look good to me. It had been working for several months and was working the other day.
My three year old and one year old sometimes "set" things for me and I don't know if something inadvertanty got "set".

Okay. Well then it's definitely not the Midiman. I have all my recording stuff on a Mac, so I'm not sure how much help I'll be--but I can at least describe to you what would fix the problem for me.
First of all, there is an Audio/MIDI dialog box that OSX can pull up. This can tell you--if you have more than one MIDI input--which MIDI interface you're using. As I have two MIDI interfaces, if the wrong one got selected, my program wouldn't read the MIDI information even though the correct interface would be receiving the information. Check to see if you can access that from the Windows mainframe.
The second thing I would check if the first solution didn't fix it is the program. Because, obviously the MIDI data is being transmitted through the cable, but it's not going INTO the program. On all the programs that I have, there is always an audio input/output dialog box and a MIDI input/output dialog box. Your's HAS to have it. Check to make sure the MIDI inputs and outputs are set to MIDIMAN--or whatever you've named your MIDI device.
If THAT doesn't do it I would check the program to make sure that when you insert a MIDI track, that the monitor switch is on. I know I've spent hours trying to figure out why my VST instrument wasn't playing only to realize that the monitor switch was turned off.
Now if this doesn't do anything, I'd call tech support, or ask someone with the same program. Because that's about all I can think of that could go wrong.
