so i hooked up the v synth to garageband with a cheap midi interface and tried to record a classical guitar sound but instead got the default piano sound that came with garageband.

so how can i record the sounds from the v ynth without using an audio track?

This is because you recorded the midi track and not the audio track coming from your vsynth assuming that's what you wanted to do.

You can change instrument in garage band if you want to keep the midi data... if you want the audio from the vsynth you need something else than a midi interface. Your question was not enough clear.

I just understood the last sentence. You should use the midi out so when you play the track again the vsynth plays the prerecorded thing
