View Full Version : Proggy, metal, new age & variety
Some persons think that the progressive music is a mix between the metal, the new age and the variety styles.
What do you think about and what are the main differences between them ?

I voted for all four options there because I think it's very dependant on the mood I'm in. Sometimes I like them, sometimes I hate them. IMO, progressive music can't really be likened to another type, because it's progressive. That's the whole idea. Other types of music don't really have it's characteristics. I suppose it could be called a mix of all types of music, but it then has it's own little bits thrown in. SC was quite metally, and ToT was very heavy, but they were both more proggy than anything else. So I don't think that prog can really be compared properly to other genres, because it encompasses all of them, yet it makes it's own style as it progresses (hence the name).

This is likely just my opinion, and possibly not shared by others. When I hear "progressive", or "prog"...it mostly makes me think "keyboards/synth" added to whatever the type of music.
Prog rock
Prog metal
etc...
I don't really think of "prog" or "progressive" as its own category of music, but rather an adjective or descriptor which further defines a certain genre.
