I discovered this site last night searching for 'online keyboard community'. It was the first one to come up, and honestly I have no clue who Jordan Rudess is.

There are only a small few metal bands I know of, with keyboard players.
Mustis from Dimmu Borgir and Janne of COB, completely different styles, are my favourites, so far.

Since this whole site is dedicated/created by Jordan, it's time for me to give Dream Theater a shot. At least then maybe I can understand more of the topics here.

So what is a good album?

My ears need something with decent recording production.
The era of hard limiting and compression that turns your eq viewer into a wall, does not make my ears happy.

Scenes From a Memory is the first DT album featuring JR, you should start with that one...

My personal favorite (so far) is Train Of Thoughts, you should give it a try too, you will notice the two different "styles" in those albums... They both are pieces of art!!

(Sorry for my bad english =P)

Scenes from a Memory is a good starter indeed!
When you're ready you definitely need to check on Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (with Jordan) and Images and Words (without the good sir =[ )

Scenes From A Memory and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence would be the best JR era ones to get imo, and Octavarium would also be a good one if you don't mind a bit more variety and a bit less metal.

If you like heavy metal, I recommend "Train of Thought" and "Awake" to you. But I think you should watch their performances first. If you like them and some songs, you can buy the albums and dvds.
Personally I want you to listen to "Live at budokan". This is awesome.

My first song was the Glass Prison and I actually started on live at budokan as my first album. But all other suggestions are good to start on. You are also joining the Dream Theater community at an awesome time because they are about to release their 10th studio album in June

I agree with everyone that says Scenes from a Memory. Make sure you set aside time to listen to the whole album all the way through though, (and ignore some certain sound effects in a few of the tracks...)

My first album was Octavarium, it was recommended in a music store to me. But although Octavarium is one of my favourite songs (you should definitely listen to that), my favourite album is by far Scenes From A Memory. It's just amazing. I think that that should definitely be your first albums to listen to. Remember that it's a concept album though, so when you listen to it the first time (and for me, nearly every time), listen to it all in one go. It's just superb. I'd love to have DT do another album like that.
