Here's my idea - I want to have a small contest.

There are going to be 2 categories: Best Backing Track and Best Solo.

It'll be a two stage process.

Stage 1 - Backing tracks should be submitted, I can host the files if needed, and we're going to be aiming for a fusion/metal genre. I'll take the first 10 entries, however any late-comers can feel free to accept and if it's good I'll toss it into the mix.

We'll do a week long poll and after that, the winner will be awarded a prize (Nothing amazing, but it'll be cool anyway)

Stage 2 - After that, we're going to use the backing track as the competitor for a soloist to show their abilities and once again, the polls will show the winner of that as well. (And yes, you too will get a cool prize)

I can host files so either send your backing directly to me, or e-mail me at enigma@enigmahack.com and I can set up an FTP account for you to upload your backing track to me.

RULES:

1 - Don't use any existing backing tracks (Must be original!)
2 - Don't use clips from songs or parts of songs.
3 - Do be creative - it's for fun, so don't be afraid to try stuff
4 - Do try and make it in the metal/fusion vein of music.
5 - Don't take it too seriously - again it's just meant to be fun :)
6 - Don't worry if you don't play the keyboard that well, we're just interested in hearing different musical ideas.
7 - Multiple entries WILL be accepted, however only 1 of them will be entered into the draw (IE: If you record multiple takes and you want people to hear it, that's cool. I'll host your file, just tell me which one you want to have as your actual entry)
8 - Any disputes go through me, however I'll mostly be reflecting back to the forum to get user consensus.

I don' t have a backing to submit, because I'm at work, but I'm sure I'll be looking for inspiration for something :)

So here we go:

SUBMIT YOUR ENTRIES!!!

Cool idea!

Let´s hope this competition goes better than the last few we had here...

How long should the backing track be?

I'm thinking that the backing probably shouldn't be any longer than 3 minutes or so, that way there's enough time for an introduction, and outro, and a decent amount of time for someone who's soloing to be able to express their message.

However, that being said, If the person doing the backing needs to have it longer, that's totally fine as well :)

I think 3 minutes could be a guideline, however not a hard-fast rule.
