So, I have a bit of a problem. A number of months ago myself and a friend decided to disassemble my roland ax-1 to give it a custom paint job. We did our best to reassemble it, and it still works, but the LED's no longer work...making it blind to tell when any of the settings are selected. He kind of claimied to know more about electrical engineering than he really did (lets not get into it, lol). So, I have to have this repaired professionally, as it is clearly beyond my ability.

What do you guys think, should I try to find some local repair place for this, or ship it to a roland repair center? What do you think this could end up costing me? Which is the cheapest/best method in your opinion? I'm not even sure if roland deals with it's vintage stuff or not.

Man, this is always a delicate matter to decide on. Of course if money is not an issue at all, you will be playing safe if you send it to a Roland repair shop, of course there is the shipping risk if its a place far away or outside your borders.

On the other hand, don't always underestimate local repair shops, after all, electronics is electronics.
For example, I live in Costa Rica, no Moog dealer in any of the neighbor countries. Recently I had a couple of problems with the backlighting, headphones and main outputs of my voyager. I freaked out, but spoke with the owner of a small music intruments repair shop. He took a look and discovered that the components where unique, so I ordered the parts from Moog Music and he installed everything flawlessly.

In your case, Its probably something simpler to fix. I would probably take it to a local repair place but ask them to be honest with you so that they don't try to fix it if they can't.
