View Full Version : Splitting the Key Ranges on the Roland xp-60

Over the last few days I have been working with a friend's Roland xp-60 to get it ready for his band to use. They are losing their keyboard player next month (Unfortunately I can't do the gig myself because their performance schedule is just too busy) and so they plan to rotate the responsibility among the singer, guitarist and bassist with this board and an rs-5 along with a few sequences using the xp-60's on board sequencer... Anyway, I was working with the key levels on the xp-60 on a multilayered patch, and noticed that even though the bar graph in the display showed certain layers in the full range, once I saved the patch (in the user area), I could only hear one sound, the last one I had adjusted (Set the keyboard range for). The others were not playing at all, but I had at least 3 more useable layers all within normal range of the keyboard...Now, it was late at night and I was a bit brain fried from my busy I.T. job, but I was able to get this working last week and it seemed to stop all of a sudden. Have any of you had this problem? How did you fix it ? Prior to this I was doing some tweaking in the sequencer. Perhaps I changed a parameter somewhere ?? Sadly I ran out of time to troubleshoot (had to get my 3 year old daughter to bed) and had to turn the keyboard back over to my friend. I'm quite sure he'll be able to figure out a workaround, or even fill in the missing layer by playing the other part on his rs-5 if neccesary, but I would really like to phone him and help resolve the problem if possible so this doesn't happen to him mid-performance. Especially since I put in a considerable amount of time getting other patches ready for him. Note...the other user mode patches I set up worked perfectly on all layers, so the problem seems to be specifig to this patch, not really global to the entire xp-60.
Thanks ! :D

Hey getting your three year old daughter to bed takes precedence for sure (I've got one too). :)

Chris I think when you fire up the synth again, you may find it working perfectly. There are actually two modes in performance mode, the "general performance mode" and the "performance/part mode". In the former, only the performance led is lit. In the latter, both the performance and the patch/part led's are lit. I think you just got into the latter to set the key ranges, and never made your way back out. In performance/part mode you can edit the patch itself and set key ranges for it. In the general performance mode you can set key ranges for a part, but its doesn't affect the patch. Notice that changes to the patch (in performance/patch mode) are not saved until the patch is saved. So working at the general level is preferable for just setting key ranges and volumes. That way you won't have to put new patches in the user bank, unless you are editing for timbre.

So ummh, does your daughter have you twisted around her little finger yet?

Best,

Jerry

Thanks Jerry ! I will pass that info along to my friend.
