I'm going to be lugging around my RD 170 and need a decent case and I've narrowed it down to two, one being a soft case and the other being big hard case and I'm wondering if it's worth shelling out over £100 more for the hard case?
Hard Case

Soft Case (last one at the bottom)

any opinions?

In short, YES!
When our band got our E-MU PK6, we got a great deal on a RoadReady hard case and it's been a lifesaver on many occasions. Spend the money, protect your investment. And, beat the living hell out of that case. Ours generally sits underneath the drums and hardware in the van or trailer. It's great to be able stack everything on top of it. And, since it has handles all the way around it, and wheels to make moving it easier, it's helped us out on more than one occasion. Especially when you're dealing with a keyboard with weighted keys.. just toting it around in a bag just doesn't cut it.

Yeah I've seen them, but they're way too expensive for me. :(
I just bought a soft case (Gator GK-88) for my K2500XS. I bought it because sometimes parts on my keyboard would snag on things when I was sliding it in & out of my vehicle. Also I have showed up for gigs when it was raining. Since I don't plan on air travel or stacking a bunch of equipment on top of my keyboard (I'm going to put my keyboard on top of the other equipment), I figured I didn't need to shell out the extra $ for a hard case.

My RD-170 is abit smaller in the dimensions but it should fit fine with the straps. Also I've heard they're quite weak but really don't know what to think. I've checked stores near me but they don't have it in.

Just be careful with it. You can get away with gig bags if you're careful.. but I've literally seen a 61 key Triton LE's keybed shattered because someone wasn't paying attention and jammed an armful of stands into the side of the case. When the bag was opened, lots of little keys came raining out. Granted, that was the result of a very clueless drummer, but still.. I'd be homicidal if someone did that to my MIDI controller, let alone an 88 key workstation.
Yeah, if you are going to be loading your keyboard up with the rest of the groups stuff, you should fork out the extra $ for a hard case (especially if you are doing it often). And definitely if the drummer is helping load stuff.
For me, I only gig about once or twice a month and I load my own equipment* into my Ford Bronco II and still have room left over.
* My gig equipment: Kurz K2500XS, 1 Mackie SRM450 (soon to be 2, currently I borrow the second one when I can), Bench, Keyboard stand, music stand, & Gig bag full of various cables & what not.
