hey guys. I recently was checking out polls and suggestions on various parts of the internet about the new upcoming Dream Theater album. So because of this, I decided to post a poll! What do you want DT to do for their next album?

Hopefully I'm not being too biased but wouldn't it be interesting if they brought back both elements of Train of Thought and also elements of Tarkus? Not sure what it would sound like though, as they are two completely different masterpieces.

Concept album! Like SFAM conceptually and with the same technical progressive brilliance!

Something proggy with a lot less heavy guitar. More keyboards and more grooves. Leaner, less noodly, and less showy. More Yes than Metallica and more Gentle Giant than either.

More Progressive.

Double Album:

Disc 1: Metal, think 6DOIT/TOT. Not so much SC.
Disc 2: Prog/concept ala SFAM.

everyone is happy.

they should do a Progressive/Ambient/Experimental 2-Disc Concept album about Dreams which comes with a full-length motion picture released in select Theaters...in Dream Theaters....

WIN.

Or they could just do whatever they feel, it's always worked for me...

I voted rock/experimental, but they wont go that way, I'm sure.

They will deliver a 100% modern DT album with all the must-themes for every type of fans, heavy metallica riffs, brainless boring guitar/key shredding, 1 epic song(so the fans can think how prog they are), little ingredients from Muse or Opeth(becase now Mike likes them). New drumset, new gadgets(check, check). This is the show every 2 years like a schedule. But the music is no more prog, just reused old templates/themes.

But hey! There are many real prog rock/metal bands out there like ToMera/Unexpect/DeerHunter/PoS/etc. But I would like to hope, DT will find back to real experimentation or will start a new way of thinking.

But today this is the winner formula, big label, many fans, success, so... I would do that way too :)

Well....you're right on some point (they usually try to put everything "DT" in their recent albums).

But I think your "real prog rock/metal bands" are hum...special choices ? Yeah, they are progressive, but I don't see any of them being "exemples" of a true progressive band. In my opinion, DT are still very progressive, just in a different way than before.

It mostly depends on my mood for SC. But the other albums I've been able to listen with pretty much any mood. :)

Voted progressive, something like ToT would be great! But then again, knowing them, it'd be something totally unexpected as they always do. And different. Haha. Guess that's why they call it "progressive".

it should be progressive and symphonic, and since JR in the band we can be confident about that :-)

it would be cool if they go back to their progressive roots. I would really love to hear DT play ala King Crimson, ELP, Genesis, etc.

Wow...and I thought we were all TRUE DT fans on this forum not just a bunch of picky whiners. That may be rude, but I'm serious, get over yourselves guys. As if ANY of us have the musical knowledge to even begin to talk down about DT.

They're making music they want to make.
I don't care what they do for their next album, 'cause I know it's going to be good.

idp
11-05-2008, 04:55 AM
Haha :) Every time we get to this, that they make music they like and nobody cares for the new album, because it will be superb no matter what.

- why is it wrong if not everyone is TRUE DT fan?
- if someone has no such musical knowledge, he/she cant tell that he/she doesnt like the music?
- what about people who likes the actual MUSIC and not the band?

Anyway...

This is a topic about new albums, so there is an interesting thing about the time required for making the albums and about the "dt should spend more time in studio" argue. And in this case I was wrong too! So...

Images 3 years (not actually, but they had many time) MAGIC
Awake - 2,5 months!!!! - MORE MAGIC
Season - written in the Images era MAGIC
FII - not months, but not so long when images - VERY GOOD ALBUM WITH LITTLE MAGIC (haha)
SFAM - 2-3months - Überbrutal MAGIC and for me the magic has gone after this. There was a little Jordan magic on turbulence (the musical themes) but thats it.

... and then the studio time is about the same on SDOIT/TOT/OCT/SC. So. They can(could) write mega-albums in a very short period of time and in a long too. DT albums arent good/not that good because they dont write them for enough time, but because they want write that actual kind of music. So, a future good album is not depend on more studio time.

Another thing, again about new albums :) Imagine a world...(rip) where Jordan doesnt join DT, but makes own prog metal band, where he is the musical boss, and they write a concept album. If he managed to write SFAM, what kind of album could he write with 100% fully freedom with young progmetal talents around him? Count in the 2001 and 2004 solo albums too in the thinking process

Mathieu Fiset

Wow, I didn't know SC was that "hated". I mean...I only dislike Constant Motion, just because it's the weakest of the album, but I still enjoy it when I listen to the full album. The other songs are amazing ! Especialy In the presence of enemies and ministry of lost souls :)

So for me, if they keep making albums like that (making what they want, not just like SC), I'll be happy. But since the poll was about saying what we WISH they do, I would love a concept album (in any musical style).

I like this cd, but not too much

I only like

ITPOE PT. I & II (I think that song is a beautiful one.)

and TDEN / CS

but the rest.. i didn't.. :frown:

I hope dream theater comes with some lovely new shit as SFAM

I'd love some SFAM & Octavarium feeling in the same package

Oh boy.. that would be..

OH BOY !

dammit, i can't even imagine how thunderous would that be.

I love the ending part of octavarium , and the whole SFAM.

That's odd, SC was what turned me on to DT in the first place. Then I started to love their older stuff like SFAM and ToT. IMO ACOS isn't my cup of tea but hey, everyone's opinion is different.

Dream Theater will always spark arguments like this. It's because they appeal to such a wide variety of fans. What other band could release a metal album (TOT) then tour with Yes, then release a prog album with pop tunes on it (8v) and tour with Megadeth?

The Metallica/Megadeth/etc fans of DT will disagree with the Yes/Gentle Giant/etc fans of DT, but it doesn't change the fact that both are fans of DT.

Being a fan does not mean you have to like every song they've written. We all have opinions on favorite and least favorite albums. There's no reason to criticize people for having different opinions. It's just when these comments are malicious towards DT do we all start arguing.

All that to say, I loved SC, and I loved 8V, and I've enjoyed every DT album to date. They've earned the right to put out whatever type of album they want, and I am very much looking forward to it. [and I can't say I'd mind another concept album...I think it's about time]

Very well put. It was the malicious comments that upset me, not the differences in opinion, DT is not my favourite band, but they're up there, and have been one of my favourite bands and biggest influences for years now, so when people start trashtalking...I get tiiiccked.

I think all these answers are great.

The thing is though, I don't understand why a lot of people (who I talked to anyway) dislike Train of Thought. I think Train of Thought was a truly amazing album. I think it is definitely one of the best albums in the history of metal. I dunno, thats just me!

My DT Top 5 Albums:

1. Scenes from a Memory- a true masterpiece of epic proportions!
2. Train of Thought- heavy, dark, progressive, amazing...
3. Systematic Chaos- this album truly describes who DT are, great album
4. Images and Words- the best progressive release of all time! a great album!
5. Falling into Infinity- extremely underrated, this album rocks my rocks off! every riff is perfect!

I want it to be everything on the list.

AFAIK every album since SFAM is a concept album. I'd prefer short balads if necesary, I hate to wait 4 -5 min. to get to the cool part. Please no U2- Coldplay inspired songs, just give me huge metal-polyrithmic-progressive-awsomeness playing with lots of keyboards. But above all I hope the new album has...

I think that a concept album would be cool...but it would be compared to SFAM the entire time >.<
I'd like to see a bit more of an experimental/progressive thread coming in, especially given the ridiculous number of gadget's JR has at his disposal to mess around on.
I wouldn't like to go more heavy than SC, it's pretty much the border of what I like when it comes to music, any heavier and its too far, not what I listen to Dream Theater for, I guess thats why I'm not an Opeth fan. That being said, SC was my first DT album, bought by chance and I still love it. Melodrama does serve it's purposes sometimes

Moar Cowbell +1
