Hey Guys,
I'm having some real problems with my PC. I need to defrag really really BAD, but my computer can no longer pass a scan disc, so I can't defrag. I don't want to reformat just yet (even though that is what this computer really needs) because I am still in the process of moving all of my music over to my Mac.
So I guess my question is if anyone knows of a way to allow my computer to de-fragment even though it can't pass a scan disc. Disc Doctor maybe? Something else (preferably free  )? Or better yet, if anyone has any ideas on the whole scan disc issue that would be great too.
Thanks!

Assuming you're running Win98 or a similar version (the Win2k/XP version of defrag doesn't scan the disk anyway) you can set it not to perform a scan before it defragments. Run Disk Defragmenter from the start menu (Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter) and on the page that asks you what drive you want to defragment, there's an "Options" button... you need to uncheck the one that says "check this drive for errors before starting" or something along those lines.
Hope this helps

I personally like to use Norton Systemworks to solve problems like these, and then promptly disable or remove it after I'm done. There's quite a few helpful tools in it.

Oh yeah, it might help if I tell you what OS I am running :) . I'm running XP.

I'll check out Norton Systemworks. Thanks again.
I use Norton Utilities and Tech Tool Pro.
They compliment each other well in that one fixes what the other missed.
(Usually Norton is the greater of the two)
If you can't scan your hard drive(s) from booting with the disc maybe you need to free up some space?
I've found that Internet Explorer creates a Download Cache that can grow unbelievably so I delete that regularily.

With the Microsoft defrag program, which is included in all Windows versions, you cannot defrag your hd without running scan disc before, so you really need to get something else - Norton is actually a good choice in most cases, even though I don't use it.
Let me also add that the defrag program, which comes with windows, is very lame, so it's always senseful to get something better.

So this brings up the question of what is a good and free defrag software? Norton costs money, doesn't it?

Well yes, but depending on what you do with your PC, how important the files on your pc are, you really should get some money together and buy a better software. I don't know any priceless defrag software anyway... ;)
