My Stepfather was in a band and they had a tape full of songs they were to cover. He told me to check out the songs by "Dream Theater". I was like, who the hell is Dream Theater? lol

So, I pop in the tape and the first song was The Mirror. I was completely blown away. Next was Metropolis Part One: The Miracle and The Sleeper and I was done. My mission in life afterwards was to possess all things DT.

I think I've heard the bass drum of every single DT song around '96 out of my brother's room ;) , the first song I really carefully listened to was actually Space-Dye Vest, because my brother gave me the transcription and told me that I should learn that. :D

Under a Glass Moon. I got a video for free that featured 3 drummers, one was portnoy. He played that double bass riff at the beggining of the song, and i was hooked. Within a week, i had owned almost all Dream Theater albums.

New Millennium, because that's the first track you get when you hit play on FII. :P

I read a review of the album a little after it was released that was full of glowing comments, and thought it sounded good. Not what I expected, but very good. Been hooked ever since.

Space Dye-Vest... I once got Awake from a girl I was in love with, she recommended me to listen to SDV.

I liked it and still like that song very much. It got me into DT. Then I bought 6doit, I was absolutely stunned!

And January this year was my first DT concert. It was an amazing experience!

I'm grateful that I got to know the girl I was in love with...

First song I heard was Strange Deja Vu. But the one that really caught my attention was One Last Time, that piano intro blew me away. So i got Scenes from a Memory and listened in awe from the beggining to the end. Had to catch some air when the cd was over, and i had myself a new favourite band. :D

The first DT song I heard was Metropolis part 1 (Live at the Marquee) and I really don't like it at first. But after a couple of times I really like it and now I'm a big fan of DT.

My first Dt song was metropolis part1 on I&W. Special thanks for my brother :)
At the beginning of the song I was just impressive but when the instrumental part began I fall in love..... & though that the cd was out of order or striped (faster and faster instrumental).
Since this date in my life, I play keyboard and listen prog metal ;)[/quote]

A lot of people were blown away by that drum solo! I remember the first time I heard it, I replayed it two or three more times before I let the song continue. Portnoy's a genius.

Pull me under, being the first on Images and words, back in 92 or 93. Listening to this album changed my life completely. I was a Malmsteen fan until that moment. I didn't think anyone could have better technical skills, what a fool I was :)

You really think JP's got a better technique than Yngwie?
Hmmm...I'd better listen again really closely.

Pull Me Under was the first tune I heard by the guys.

Another Day,

i remember goin to the music store and listening to it over and over....then Metropolis started growing on me......that was back in 1995-1996 i think

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Yngwie is more technically sound that JP. Check out Yngwie's debut album Rising Force for a good demonstration.

My personal opinion is that JP kicks Malmsteen's ass especially in composition but also in technique, I'm sick and tired of the same minor scales and arpeggios throughout Malmsteen's career. But that's just me and anyway discussions of the type "X sux and y rulez", well... suck.
There's also another thingie.
What is technique anyway ? If you repeat the same 4 licks ad nauseam until you play them flawlessly at lightining speed are you entitled to be the best technician available ?
I have a lot of respect Malmsteen for his early years and for having Jens on keys, but he's not the best.

WTF JP beats Yngwie malmsteen with ease JP has better technique and better everything but if malmsteen had better technique his solos dont have ANY melody always the same just high note BRRRRRRRRR EVERY time.

I'm sick and tired of the same minor scales and arpeggios

Yep

Well, I must be honest in saying that I've never really claimed Malmsteen to be the best. Perhaps it is safe to say that "technique" is only a matter of opinion. All in all, I think that JP is a better guitarist, who has done much more with his career than Malmsteen because his solos are more imaginative, and his composition is much more creative. Many people also compare Malmsteen with Timo Tolkki, but to me there's no comparison...once again because of composition and imagination.

I will say, however that Malmsteen does have his high marks with some songs. Almost everything from the Rising Force and Eclipse albums were pretty good. Most anything that Jens is involved with is good...I'm pretty big on Stratovarius.

So, sorry if I offended anyone. lol

but of everyone here, i have the weirdest DT-start song.

the first song i listened was anna lee.

then i got hollow years and then i bought FII.

i got ompletely blown away with anna lee.

i've heard that fii is only for dt fanatics because it's different from the others albums, and it's not a good album to start, but i started with that one and i'm crazy since that.

i think if i would listened first sfam, i think i wouldn't like dt.

Falling Into Infinity is a great album. Sherinian gave DT something different, and I like that. I will say that I wasn't too impressed with Just Let Me Breathe or Take Away My Pain, but the rest of the album was pretty damn good. Trial of Tears is one of DT's finest works if you ask me.

Mine was Metropolis Pt. I, although not from beginning to end. A friend of man was listening to I&W on his cd player in school. Then he saw me and told me "Hey, listen to this!" He knew I played the piano, so he put the song at 5:30, short before the bass solo, so I could then listen to the keyboard solo. I was totally blown away. Then, back in home, I donwloaded the song ( ), and listened to it completely. Then I was a total DT fan.

The first DT song I heard might've been something of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance, but I really don't remember because it was at a concert before I was really big into them. The first song I heard of theirs on a CD was Learning to Live. It really got me into them.
