Say you had a old keyboard, such as a Roland D-20 (which is what I have), and you have a Roland continuous sustain pedal. The D-20 will not detect that the pedal is continuous, and therefore only sends sustain "on" and "off" messages.

I want to use a wah effect with my lead sound, but because the D-20 doesn't know that my pedal is continuous, the wah "snaps" between it's minimum and maximum sound. Should I:

1. Buy a new keyboard (which is highly unlikely since I'm very low on cash)

or

2. Buy a guitar or multi-fx wah pedal and put the lead through that (such as a dunlop cry baby or ibanez weeping demon)

What should I do???

well if you like the sound you have on the d20 then keep it and get a guitar wah pedal.

I rather buy a new key, because lot of "now" technologies can't be used for old things, like your old D-20. But also keep your D20... In the future, it will be an antique things:tongue:

Ok, so here's my decision:

I've decided to go with getting a guitar wah pedal, but I'm not sure which to choose from. I like the Cry Baby by Jim Dunlop, but I also like the tweakability of the Ibanez Weeping Demon. I don't like the Morley "Bad Horsie", because it's not very versatile.

So which one do you think I should get?

You'd have to get two wah pedals, mind, since guitars are all mono. You would also have to try the pedal out first, as it might not like taking a line level signal as input instead of the standard (much quieter) guitar signal.

My recommendation would be to get a new keyboard, and then if you desperately need a sound or two from your D20, set up a patch which routes the D20's outputs through your main board's FX rack.

How bout the Dunlop Crybaby 535q? It has a 5-way tone control switch and sweep range i think. So you can still modify the control to suit your needs

Vox and Morley make the best wahs. Crybabies, frankly, are shit, excet maybe if you get one of the higher end more specialized ones. The "normal" ones definitely wouldnt solve your problem, because they have a very characteristic "on/off" sound. The Voxes and Morleys have a much wider sweep, so they are a lot more expressive and smoother. That's why I have a Vox (but would love to have a Morley too). But dont get the Morley Safer, I don't think that would have the sound you need.

BTW, this is coming from someone who has played both guitar and keys for over 15 years.

But really, I would work on upgrading the D-20 itself instead.
