View Full Version : How the hell does Jordan.....

.....use the ernieball volume/expression pedal? I'm sure that he uses that 'cause I've seen it live and on the 9dobt... the problem is that it's a filter and is different from a normal keyboard volume pedal, which has a single stereo cable that goes in the keyboard; this, instead, needs an in and an out cable. I don't think that Jordan makes the sound pass through it and then goes to the amplifier (how you would do that with a guitar), but I have no idea how to get to a solution.. My guitarist has it and I tried in several ways, but I don't really find a way to make it work...
Do anybody knows a solution to my problem?
Many thanks,
Paolo

I have the mono version of the Ernie Ball volume pedal, which has Mono in, Mono out, and tuner out. It's not the expression pedal, however.. that's a different beast altogether.

An expression pedal like that just uses a single cable (I believe it's TRS/stereo though) through a normal 1/4" TRS footswitch input to have more control than just on and off by giving you a range of 0-127 instead. While you can use this for volume, you can also use it for just about anything your keyboard lets you use it for, such as filter sweeps, frequency boost/cut, volume, etc. Basically, if your keyboard has the CC (continuous controller) values available to trigger, you can control it with the expression pedal.

Of course, it could just be a MIDI version of the pedal too.. but I'm not sure on his exact setup.

Thanks Tigerfolly for the answer, but I didn't really understand...
How do you connect it the keyboard? From the mono output to the CC of the keyboard? Because I tried in this way but it doesn't seem to work...
Maybe I have to set something specific in the setup?
(I have a Kurzweil k2600x)

From Ernie Ball's website:

Q: Can our Volume Pedal be used as an expression pedal?

A: An expression pedal controls the amount of voltage that allows certain functions, such as, delay, distortion levels, volume, etc. in a keyboard or an effects processor to perform to whatever parameters the user sets it up to do. Our pedal may work as an expression pedal , but the manufacturer usually suggests what type of pot [potentiometer] needs to be used, 500k, 250k, 25k, etc. in a pedal, keyboard, or an effects processor. The pedal might require a more sophisticated design, contact the manufacturer to determine what type of pedal is necessary.

I've never used my volume pedal as an expression pedal personally, but logically yeah, it should be the output of the volume pedal to the expression pedal input on the keyboard. If I had an extra K2600x floating around, I'd give it a test myself.. but alas, I don't.

Anyone got a spare K2600x they want to give me for field tests? ;)

As a volume pedal is basically a variable resistor, you should be able to use any volume pedal as an expression pedal by connecting it to an insert lead, with the stereo jack in the keyboard, and the two mono jacks connected to input and output of the volume pedal. I've not tried it myself, but I gather it works with the Boss FV50L (personally mine gets used for guitar, cos I have 2 EV5's, but still...) :)

Thank you guys, I'll try your advices and keep you informed if it works!
Thanks again

Ah... another thing...
Do I need the stereo or the mono pedal?
And, for the impedance, is it better a low one since the keyboard is an active instrument? (like the 25k, for example?)

Hello, I wrote to kurzweil's website and this was the answer..

Thank you for your support of the Kurzweil family of musical
instruments and pro audio electronics.

The K26 requires a 10K½ linear tapered potentiometer in it control
pedal input. The pedal also needs to terminate in a 1/4" TRS plug.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

I didn't understand really much..

This is what they mean!

You can program your K2600XS to use this pedal as volume/expression/and many other functions.

As for the Ernie Ball pedal......it sounds like Jordan may have a different model than your friend or maybe he uses it differently....

Good Luck!

I'm using my Ernie Ball volume pedal as an expression pedal hooked up to my Boss GT-5.
I'm using it for Wah right now (because the pedal on the gt-5 won't stay in mid positions anymore)
I tried hooking the ernie ball to my K2500xs using a 1/4" to 1/4" TRS cable = didn't work.

Currently using a Boss FV-300L (it's bad for not staying mid position)

I tried my Behringer FCV100 volume pedal, it works as expression pedal on my gt-5 but not on the Kurzweil.

I wouldn't attempt replacing a 25k pot with a 10k one in the ernie ball, it's one of the worst do-it-yourself projects I remember.
